Nice article.

Too bad our flight from New York was cancelled last year and our national airlines are not prepared to step in and provide good direct service.

Oh well - hopefully they will get to us through Calgary.

I find review from American media/bloggers etc. generally express pleasant surprise on this "hidden gem". Bit more positive than we are used to from our own side (including ourselves).

Have to say the MacEwan CFAC replacement is looking interesting... I didn't realize the theatre was going to be significantly larger, which is a good thing. Exterior is still a dogs breakfast but that seems to be in keeping with a lot of Edmonton city building projects as of late...

Edmonton's new privacy regulations have infill builders fuming

ELISE STOLTE

Edmonton’s infill builders are fuming after a set of recent privacy amendments forced them to re-engineer and resubmit projects already waiting up to eight weeks in the city queue.

With the winter season looming, commercial homebuilder Darcy Fett estimates this delay and additional design will cost him up to $20,000.

Fett wanted to include a rooftop patio across the front of his skinny home in Belgravia, similar to designs he had seen across the city. But after applying for his permit June 30, Fett got a note back from city staff eight weeks later, saying changes passed Aug. 22 must be considered.

“The entire front facade had to change,” said the homebuilder, who handles 10 projects a year. He’s worried about having to pour concrete protected with tarps and heaters during the winter. “To have the project just sitting there for a month and a half, it’s frustrating. Winter construction can be quite expensive.”

No cookie-cutter homes under new Edmonton infill rules

ELISE STOLTE

A new set of infill rules would force builders to change home designs for Edmonton’s mature neighbourhoods.

If the new rules pass, builders will have to use at least three materials on each street-facing facade and won’t be able to build identical homes side by side.

These and other changes to the mature neighbourhood zoning rules will be discussed Thursday from 4 pm. to 8 p.m. at the Chateau Louis on Kingsway Avenue.

Here are highlights of the proposed changes:

Rear attached garages

Responding to consumer demand, new rules would allow homebuilders to construct attached garages in the backyard for the first time. But they’ll only be allowed on lots 15 metres (50 feet) or wider and may hold a maximum of two vehicles.

At the same time, regulations would tighten rules for front attached garages, restricted to where no back lane exists or where the previous house had a front driveway.

But rear attached garages worry some residents. They change the pattern on the block, keeping sun from neighbours’ backyards, said Susan Kamp, planning director with the Belgravia Community League: “Having space between the house and garage is pretty important, otherwise you end up with these little enclosed backyards.”

Goodbye Deadmonton, hello Hipmonton!

David Staples: Get used to praise, not putdowns, about our suddenly hip city

DAVID STAPLES, EDMONTON JOURNAL

Edmonton is suddenly getting praised as a hip city, a star city, a city on the move.

You OK with the piling on of praise, modest Edmontonians? Brace yourselves.

After decades of outsiders mocking, belittling and blasting away at Edmonton, publications from New York to Calgary are praising the city, its restaurants, its physical beauty and its supposed cool.

Even Edmonton pizza is getting a push.

In the Readers Choice Awards of Conde Nast Traveller, Edmonton’s pizza was voted the eighth best in the entire world, ahead of the pizza in Milan, Florence and Palermo, Italy.

Then there’s CBC Calgary’s Richard White, who in his comparison of Edmonton and Calgary’s architecture noted that Edmonton used to be Deadmonton but now the tides have turned: “Edmonton’s City Centre is once again thriving with 35 active development projects worth over $5 billion. The opening of the iconic Rogers Place and the creation of the new Ice District with its new hotels, condos, office buildings and casino has rocketed Edmonton to ‘star city’ status … What is perhaps even more shocking is Edmonton will soon have a taller building than Calgary *gasp*.”

I like to hear good things about Edmonton, but for some reason, writing about other peoples praise in the local newspaper about how awesome we are is very cringeworthy.. to me at least.

^^

is the coverage being covered worthwhile?

probably... in the same sense that good advertising is worthwhile. you just need to recognize it for what it is. it's kind of like writing about superbowl ads.

at least jessica festa included the "paid advertisement" rider in her article that is too often omitted:

"Recently, I was fortunate enough to be invited by Edmonton Tourism to attend the Edmonton International Fringe Festival. I of course jumped at the chance (and was more than excited to escape NYC’s blistering heat for a few days)."

so while the article was titled "18 reasons why your next big trip should be to Edmonton, Canada", one is left to wonder if jessica ever would have found her way to edmonton to write it in the first place if we hadn't paid her way (or if that should have been reason 19). but like the superbowl ads, if they didn't provide at least some value, nobody would pay for them.

even if that value is primarily making edmonton feel better about edmonton than for someone from new york to come here based on jessica's paid advice. because at the end of the day, edmontonians are edmonton's best sales representatives and we can sell the city as great or as someplace to avoid based on our own perceptions and how we feel about our city. and if nothing else, it is 18 good suggestions of things to do with our own guest that not everyone would think of.
