Transat further changes

Looks like MAN is now getting chopped too.

Transat continues to slash and burn its Western Canada ops.

So now it's LGW 3pw and AMS 1pw only next summer for direct service to Europe on TS. Hope this gets replaced with some rouge action!

So no moving sidewalks (but lots of walking), no water fountains, and minimal gate seats. Sounds like generating revenue was a higher priority than the comfort and experience of travelers.

Yeah I'm pretty pissed to hear about the lack of drinking fountains, with the ridiculous security rules you need to purchase a bottle or two anyways past security but the ability to fill them up again at a fountain makes this somewhat better.

Not to mention with all the eco features they are touting with this terminal those new fountains that have bottle fillers usually have a counter saying how many bottles they've saved.

Does Rouge have any slack in its 763 fleet to that effect?

Huge missed opportunity to return it to its rightful name of McCall.

The Calgary Calgary International Airport? The YYC YYC?

I agree. McCall Field has feeling. And history. Although it probably wouldn't be trivial to change the name.

Shrug, I think YYC has really permeated the social psyche of Calgarians in the last 5 years or so. Good alignment.

Aside from a handful historical buffs, McCall Field means nothing to the average Calgarian

I fully agree with The Fisher Account on this one, and on this particularly rare occasion, I disagree with Bigtime on his "satisfy everybody" suggestion. That is wayyyyy too long.

I don't get the current re-naming though. That's just a waste of money.

Hmmm....

Edmonton has very limited flight options but rockstar water bottle filling stations, while Calgary has the opposite. Frankly, I'd take Calgary for the flight options.

Heathrow airport

NEXT time you are delayed at Heathrow airport's Terminal 5, here's a fun game to help you while away the hours. It's called “Find the drinking fountain”, and it's guaranteed to keep you busy during the longest of delays.

Could they not have simply called it McCall International Airport and leave it at that? Do they even need to add the YYC onto the front??

Anyway, the terminal looks great from what I've seen. The water bottle issue is something they can fix easy enough, if enough people complain.

See, this is good becuase despite being long, you can take the one unique word from it(McCall) and use that as shorthand. Yes, you can use YYC as well, but McCall is more friendly name.

I was also at the trials yesterday and here's a few of my observations:

- Check-in procedure was smooth, the automated baggage drop off was pretty neat, thought it did take a few readjustments for the scanner to read the tag.

- Security screening for D/E may need some fine tuning in my opinion. Each individual baggage screening belt features 4 individual loading bays. Upon filling up your bin, the passenger will push their bin forward and the automated conveyor belt will pull it into the x-ray. With 4 passengers doing this simultaneously, I can see bin(s) being staggered and separated...some confused/anxious looks on trial passengers faces when their expected bin(s) were in-between other passenger bin(s).

- The tiled flooring was surprisingly quiet in both the check-ins hall and within D/E concourse... wheeling luggage around had a muted sound to it.

- Agreed with the lack of water fountains, should be an easy fix, and is definitely needed.

- Both International/USA holdrooms had a good variety of seating options, places to linger, shop and eat. I like the wood material finish on the ceiling, but felt it was an missed opportunity that they didn't continue that scheme into the gated areas. (Asides from the lack of seating, the gated area felt cold and sterile)

- Air bridges are similar to have I have seen in bigger airports (ie. HKG), with downward ramps leading into the customs corridor.

- As for the customs corridor, ramps from both international/usa inbound flights converge into the main customs hall, clearly marked zones for those making connections, or for those making YYC their final destination. Automated passport control kiosks and immigration was smooth.

- Baggage claim area was nice!, truly felt like a big airport to me. Really liked the wire-framed animal art throughout.

- Upon exiting, the reception area is very similar, if not a bigger version of the current USA/Intl reception area. Lots of stone and heisenberg glass!

Someone tweeted a photo of this system today on Twitter as the media are touring the facility today. https://twitter.com/660NEWS/status/784040825177112576

The first word that came to mind started with an F and was four letters long. CATSA has been trialing this system in Toronto's terminal 3 for the last while. My experiences with it have been exactly as you say. Most passengers require 3 if not 4 bins... 1 for roller bag, 1 for briefcase/purse, 1 for coat/phone/personal items and 1 for liquid and gels and their laptop. The loading area only allows for 1 bin so as someone is putting their roller bag in the bin, they're watching the bin with their phone and wallet disappear through the x-ray machine mixed in with other people's bins. It causes anxiety. It causes confusion. It is unique compared to the standardized way of passenger screening used everywhere else in North America and Europe. Passengers hate it and the CATSA agents I've talked to hate it but of course now we're using it here in YYC. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Slow clap to CATSA and YYC for this.

Curious about the security check, do they have the full body scanners? If so, are they grab an occasional passenger, or for everyone? In the last 10 years I've never seen any consistency in their application in various airports.
