Upon filling up your bin, the passenger will push their bin forward and the automated conveyor belt will pull it into the x-ray. With 4 passengers doing this simultaneously, I can see bin(s) being staggered and separated...some confused/anxious looks on trial passengers faces when their expected bin(s) were in-between other passenger bin(s).

Someone tweeted a photo of this system today on Twitter as the media are touring the facility today.

The first word that came to mind started with an F and was four letters long. CATSA has been trialing this system in Toronto's terminal 3 for the last while. My experiences with it have been exactly as you say. Most passengers require 3 if not 4 bins... 1 for roller bag, 1 for briefcase/purse, 1 for coat/phone/personal items and 1 for liquid and gels and their laptop. The loading area only allows for 1 bin so as someone is putting their roller bag in the bin, they're watching the bin with their phone and wallet disappear through the x-ray machine mixed in with other people's bins. It causes anxiety. It causes confusion. It is unique compared to the standardized way of passenger screening used everywhere else in North America and Europe. Passengers hate it and the CATSA agents I've talked to hate it but of course now we're using it here in YYC. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Slow clap to CATSA and YYC for this.
