Hope the driver's okay. No mention of pax, but probably awfully close to zero in that direction in the am.
Only 2 passengers on the train, reportedly in the rear LRV and minor injuries.

Supposedly there may be some structural damage to the station as well from what was reported on the radio, but that seems suspect since the derailment is a good couple hundred feet past the station.

Did the driver forget to hit the brakes or was it a malfunction? Glad it was mostly an empty train, that would have been pretty bad if it was full!

I think the only reasonable explanation is the driver having an health issue - at least that's the only thing that makes sense to me.

Forgetting to hit the brakes doesn't send you off the end of the rails 150m past the end of the platform at what have been nearly full speed.

From the interview I heard on CBC this afternoon, the lead LRV is a write-off, the middle LRV is damaged, but can be repaired and the trailing LRV is ok.

My theory is the same as YNAT's; could have been a medical issue.

Something's not adding up:

“Just before 7 a.m., this train was heading westbound and stopped at Tuscany station to let passengers off and on. Then, instead of actually heading back into downtown — heading east — the train headed west into an area where we typically store trains,” said Russell Davies, manager of the Calgary Transit Fleet and acting director.

I don't wish to stray too far into speculation, but normally the first thing an operator does when stopping at a terminal is to unlock the passenger doors, disable the cab and walk out of it...

Apparently a medical issue is not suspected. Could it be as simple as distracted driving?

CrossedTheTracks is right - there is really no way this was a medical issue or distracted driving in the traditional sense. The driver stopped at Tuscany, "forgot to exit the cab and the car, walk to the other end and get in". Furthermore, I heard one report say the train left the tracks going 60km/hr and accelerating! What?

Ya' really have a heck of a huge responsibility driving a train - and this situation really makes me wonder.

Now that being said, from a process perspective, is there no fail-safe that triggers the brake if one drives too far on a track that is about to end? Don't want to relinquish responsibility from the driver even if this is a gap, however.

Could be human error. She maybe thought she was at Crowfoot. I doubt it would the first time continuing on has happened.

As for any automated system in place to prevent a runaway, it might be disabled to accommodate for storage on the tail track. The tracks wouldn't have been built without it.

That's my understanding too, in the tail track areas they don't have the isolation turned on that the main tracks have, as otherwise they couldn't store more than one train consist on each tail track (and Tuscany often has 2 on each side). All the control in the tail track area is through process not systems.

The thing I find surprising is that you would be able to see the end of the track from the Tuscany station, so how would one accidentally drive right off the end of the line? Strange incident for sure.

If they were using ATP, couldn't they separate the tail track into two blocks? If there was a train in the furthest block, a train at the platform would only have a yellow aspect.

Spotted the two halves of 2311 sitting outside of OBMF this afternoon with a few people looking at it. Looks like they dismantled the articulation (or what was left of it) to load it up and haul it back there.

I assume the other two (2310 and 2329) are inside at OBMF, Anderson or Hayesboro while they figure out what happened.

4-car U2 consist! I just about fell over boarding the train at Brentwood today when 4 U2's pulled up. For some reason, I thought they couldn't put 4 together (or simply that they wouldn't bother to). Obviously they can!

Edmonton's been running 4 and 5 car U2 consists for years. They've been designed to run that way since they were built. It's more of a case of trying to make an effort to avoid U2 use if at all possible.

And I believe there was also an issue with the power draw from running a 4 car consist that was only resolved in the past few years. I've only ever seen 4, 5 or even 6 car consists being shuttled between Anderson and Hayesboro, never in service so that was a rare sight indeed.
