agreed. I think the entire thing should be white like videotron centre. It looks so sharp with the blue seats

Comparison photographs of progress upon the new 9,000 seat Events Centre in downtown Moncton (taken from the same perspective).

June 22nd

August 24th

September 21st

Pretty amazing progress for only three months

This project will be transformative for the west end of the downtown core of the city. Things are already starting to happen.

They just had the official groundbreaking ceremony for the Junction Urban Village at the corner of Main & Vaughan Harvey, about one block from the new events centre.

This project is worth about $100M (similar to the events centre), and will include 5-6 buildings, including a Goodlife Fitness Centre (under construction), a Hilton branded hotel and a "signature" six storey retail/commercial/apartment building. The remaining buildings will be condominiums with ground floor retail/restaurant space. The hotel and the signature building will be completed in 2018 (coinciding with the opening of the events centre).

Beginning in 2018, there are plans afoot to build two apartment/condo towers on the old Highfield Square parking lot, across from the main entrance to the events centre. Construction won't occur until that point, because the parking lot is currently used as a martialling area for the events centre construction equipment.

Finally, the Aquillini Group out of Vancouver has acquired a whole city block kitty-corner to the events centre, including the current Crowne Plaza Hotel. They have announced no official plans for this block yet, but the presumption is that something "big" is planned that will tie into the events centre project.

All totalled, between the events centre and ancillary developments, I wouldn't be surprised to see $400M or so in development in the west end of the downtown core by 2020.

^ That's coming along very nicely. It's going to have quite an effect on downtown Moncton by the looks of things.

So close!

Update from September 22, 2016.

^ Video screen testing demonstrates how vivid the colours are even in direct sunlight.

^ Nice!

The far end one really gives a good scale comparison for the screen.

Looks like this project is going to get a reboot.

Gatineau city council today approved a new arena for the Olympiques on Boulevard de la Cité near Boul. de la Gappe.

This location is in what you might call a secondary downtown, which is suburban in character. Like what they tried to do at Centrepointe in Nepean or maybe downtown Mississauga. It was created by the former Ville de Gatineau before the merger. It has our main performing arts centre, our main sports centre with pools and gyms, and there are also government offices, an outdoor stage for concerts, a library, cafés, restaurants, a community health centre, a community college, daycares, etc. within walking distance in this area. A major station on our BRT system (Rapibus) is right across the street. It's still a work in progress but it's not dead. This will likely help it further a long a bit more.

As for the Guertin site in Vieux-Hull (just a few km from Parliament Hill in Ottawa, hopefully it can become a nice inner city neighbourhood. A lot of people on Gatineau forums have said today that this is another nail in the coffin for the old downtown, but really... as someone said the old Guertin was in the Vieux for 50 years and it didn't do much to contribute to the vitality of that part of the city in the half-century it's been there.

A new use for the Guertin lands might help revitalize the old downtown more, as what that part of the city painfully needs the most is more *residents*.

The new complex would have a 4000 seat arena plus 3 community ice pads.

It's sort of on the edge of Vieux-Hull, though, and right next to a major highway. Everyone drives in for the game and then drives out after. No connection to urban facilities and nothing overly attractive was nearby.

Cité & Gappe isn't a bad choice for location but it in and of itself is still suburbanesque in nature. At least the new location is on the Rapibus corridor which makes life a lot easier for people travelling in from Ottawa.

It's suburban for sure but the goal is for it to look like this eventually:

Currently the area looks like this:
