They did such a nice job of the place, I'm surprised they allow smoking as a matter of principle. Must be that most of their target audience smokes

I was at the Marriott at River Cree back in Jan or Feb this year, and have been into the casino. Not a bad hotel itself, but jeez, all that second-hand smoke in the casino area!!! And no, I don't smoke. Nor do I gamble - I was there for a conference on autism. It was like going back into time before the City of Edmonton, and later, the whole province banned smoking inside most, if not all, public places.

I think there's a either a loophole or special allowance for smoking to be permitted because of the casino being on a reserve.

I play hockey at the River Cree, one thing we do after the game is go for a couple pops in the casino. I can't handle the second hand smoke either. I've stopped going lately because it's just to much.

Win a home energy audit

Edmontonian homeowners are invited to enter online to win one of 24 free home energy audits as part of the Home Energy Performance: Spot the Difference contest.

Helping Edmontonians understand and improve their home’s energy performance is critical to the City’s commitment to reduce community greenhouse gases and transition to an energy sustainable future. Once the home energy audit is complete, contest winners will be provided with a national EnerGuide rating and label for their home.

“We want to inspire Edmontonians to improve their home energy efficiency,” says Mike Mellross Project Manager at the City of Edmonton. “Edmonton homes account for nearly 20% of the energy consumed in the city and are responsible for 20% of our greenhouse gas emissions.”

“Publicly displaying energy performance of homes has been shown to increase the value of energy efficiency improvements in existing homes and demand for energy efficient new homes. Data collected from the contest will be added to a public online mapping tool that will eventually allow builders, buyers, sellers and homeowners to compare home ratings across Edmonton.”

The contest begins at 8 a.m. Mountain Daylight Time on Friday, September 23, 2016 and closes at noon Mountain Daylight Time on Sunday, October 16, 2016.

The contest is part of Edmonton’s Community Energy Transition Strategy which is designed to make Edmonton an energy sustainable city and includes actions to reduce greenhouse gases and increase energy efficiency and conservation across the city.

I haven't been there in years and don't know how well they are doing. But considering the comments that it's quite smoky in there, they are attracting the crowd they wanted and they keep them coming. Nothing is next unless it will make them money I guess.

Unless we renege on or renegotiate Treaty 6 with the people who've been on the land since before our laws were even applicable here, they'll (understandably) continue to do as they please on their own lands.

As it stands, First Nations have the right to self-determination & sovereignty as laid out in the Treaty. If you don't want to be subject to the laws of other places, perhaps stay in Canada.

The few times I've been dragged to river cree, the place is packed... so obviously they are doing well. They seem to get a lot of smaller venue concerts/shows too.

As for the smoking thing on reserves, it is what it is. They also get cheaper booze, cigarettes, gasoline...

I've been to River Cree many times and the smoke isn't as bad as some are making it out to be. And I'm asthmatic.

as for what it's worth, i wouldn't trade what i get "off reserve" that they don't get "on reserve" for all the cheaper booze, cigarettes, gasoline... in the world.

on the other hand, perhaps unconditional no support for oil sands or pipelines should lead to no supply of gasoline or asphalt or oil products...

i always thought the building paid a reasonable amount of homage to lever house - skidmore owings and merrill's 1950 masterpiece and one of my favourites - with the exception of the curve (which i still find awkward and not elegant) and the ground floor/podium (which i still find much less inviting). i'm also not a fan of the board and batten aluminum at the west end or the recently added perforated patterned metal cladding at the east end (both of which seem to say "look, we can do this in edmonton too" whether or not doing it is warranted).

i also agree with you that there is a tendency to go from classy to gaudy much to quickly when it comes to lighting and it's to the detriment of the architecture behind it. i think the proper balance is when the lighting remains complementary to the architecture instead of allowing the architecture to simply become a canvas for the lighting.
