Here's my comment from April 11 (just sayin'):

"A couple of months after gaining power, you will hear Pallister, or his Finance minister, make a statement along the lines of: Now that we had a chance to look at the books, we were shocked by what we saw, and we'll have to hold off on our financial commitments for an indeterminate period."

Yeah, this is standard operating procedure for new governments. They're always shocked by how badly the previous government mismanaged things, etc.

Pallister's been getting more questions in question period about his Costa Rican interests and why he hasn't previously declared them according to the conflict of interest guidelines. He's not really answering.

Changing course on budget

Quote:
The Pallister government’s first budget Tuesday will mark the beginning of a long and gruelling road towards rehabilitating the province’s finances as the Tories try to reverse nearly 17 years of financial mismanagement under the NDP.

But it won’t be easy. This week’s fiscal blue print for 2016-17 will be mostly about sending a signal to the public, the business community and most importantly to the bond-rating agencies that the days of free spending and unsustainable debt accumulation are over...

I hate being reminded about it but it gives me a glimmer of hope..otherwise, another down-grade in bond-rating is a scary thought for the provincial economy.

With the 1st Provincial budget released by the PC party, 6 weeks into their first term, please use this thread for political disscusions...rants /good and bad ..thx

Quote:
2015-2016 -- $1.011 billion (updated forecast May 31)

2016-2017 -- $911 million (budgeted)

Manitoba’s first Progressive Conservative budget in 17 years freezes taxes, provides modest tax cuts and maintains healthy levels of government program spending.

Finance Minister Cameron Friesen delivered what he termed a "principled," "practical" and "positive" financial blueprint, one he claimed will place the province on a path to fiscal sustainability.

More Manitobans would vote under proportional representation: report

Maybe. I'll take a page from South Park. Who do you vote for, the douche or the turd sandwich? That's the problem. Vote for this yahoo or that yahoo. I'll vote for neither.

I would be more likely to make my vote count next time if I could vote for the premier, then vote for my local MLA.

We don't have a presidential system. We have a Westminster responsible government system where the premier is selected from the party having a majority of seats in the legislative assembly after an election. If you want a presidential system, you can move to the States and vote for Trump.

The premier and cabinet need to maintain the confidence of the legislature. Direct election doesn't work:

In 1992, in an attempt to produce more stable governments, Israel adopted a system of direct election of the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister was directly elected separately from the Knesset in 1996, 1999 and 2001. The direct election of the Prime Minister was abandoned after the 2001 election, having failed to produce more stable governments.

I know... that's the point of the article. Electoral reform. FYI I will never live in the US and super guarantee I wouldn't vote for Trump. I don't even like to talk about US politics its so ridiculous.

Anyways, I've come to realize I dislike political parties. All they do is watch out for themselves, and bash the other party. They don't actually do what's good for the people, which is the whole point of politics. But its the best solution there is, instead of having everyone independent, then they'd form alliances anyway, etc, etc, etc.

My point was I'd have preferred to vote for whom I think is best in my riding(whatever its called) and vote for whom I think is best for premier in the last election. That's how I'd have voted. Instead, I wasted my vote.

You might like proportional systems then. One of their selling points is that they get rid of strategic voting. You don't have to vote for a party you don't really like to stop a party you really really don't like.

Given the MB Hydro Board report today and the WFP editorial, it looks like we're in for some severe austerity measures.

Would anyone like to chime in on the status of:

South Perimeter, PTH 100 upgrades
PTH 1 west bypass
Provincial component of Waverley underpass
New Cancer Care Manitoba building

Waverley is a go. I would pretty much assume every other project that is not currently under construction or already has funding approved, is cancelled. Or "on hold".

Everything. MI (MIT) is still planning. But they've been planning for decades. It's all about the funding.

MUCH NEEDED.

Eastside Road Authority gravy train is over.

MB Hydro needs a reality check too. They need to stop paying glorified clerks $60+ a year. Someone needs to hold them accountable for the good of the Province. The disproportionate # of engineers employed by Hydro for what is actually needed is obscene. Not to mention the majority of Hydro engineers don't take responsibility for anything and still get all the pay. "Let's just get Stantec to take the risk".

Amen. That's typical of engineering. Take as little risk as you possibly can. If you can get someone, like Stantec, to take all the risk. Perfect. Engineering is about evaluating risk and minimizing its impacts. Hydro is a gravy train in itself.

Absolutely it is. Hydro unnecessarily has hundreds more engineers than they actually need on staff, in positions that shouldn't need an P.eng, and subsequently not the salary either. It's a gravy train alright. Hopefully the new Gov't makes some changes. I'm all for good jobs in Manitoba, but what's going on at Hydro is obscene.

I know some folks who work there. The ones who've been hired straight out of school don't really get it. The ones who go over to Hydro from a private consulting company are somewhat surprised. Not really. But it's soooooo slow. In consulting, every hour you're not chargeable to a client is a step towards your firing. At Hydro, if you're not busy, meh.

This quote from Allum, responding to Pallisters earlier calls for everyone on deck at the leg. hahaha good for a laugh. But this sums up my view on politics pretty good.
