Wait... what? Am I seeing some obtuse references to a race track on the airport lands?

Is this for real? If so, I'd swear in some other language that Edmonton Airport means dog's breakfast, and one empty of nutrition at that.

I think the second DL flight was always meant to be seasonal.

Somehow, AS, the smallest of the US major carriers, still manages to do well at YEG with no codeshare with ac or ws....how do they do it, is beyond me.

I flew DL twice this summer, to California via sea and to the east coast via msp...both flights from yeg were completely full save a couple of seats in business. I don't get how the major ual and aa capacity was never even partially filled by DL.

I try to fly AS whenever I can, they seem dedicated to the markets they serve much more than the other carriers.

The second DL flight was originally loaded as year round, then dropped to just about three weeks over Xmas and now dropped altogether.

I would hope the flights would be full in summer! Why hasn't the capacity been filled? Good question.

AS has just such a huge network out of SEA it makes for a great connection point for YEG travellers. Even they have dropped weekly frequencies in the winter to 19 in the last couple of years though.

well 2 weekly frequencies dropped vs entire routes....plus the AS flights are either domestic or mexico, hawaii, etc...no way, SEA can compare to what sfo or ord offer. that is what i am trying to say here. the fact that AS is able to make it work at yeg, but not the likes of ual, aa and dl is beyond me, despite all the codeshare and support they get from ac and ws.

My point in general was even AS isn't picking up the slack and in fact winding back even if just a bit. The other carriers are finding it more economical to connect in other Canadian cities. That's the geographic disadvantage and smaller market of YEG at play unfortunately.

Maybe all the airlines - domestic and foreign - are using the recent downturn in our economy as an excuse to go completely to a hub strategy.

What better time to do it.

^Not sure i agree with that. AC has always made it clear through business plans and route announcements that YYZ is their hub and YVR is sort of a hub to Asia. AC's involvement in YYC has a lot to do with WestJet more than anything else. The fact that Alberta has had an over the top economy for the last 10 years has also helped AC involvement at YYC.

As for WestJet i believe they pretend that they are not a hub airline and serve all cities equally or at least enough people believe somehow believe that when in fact their hub is YYC and their flights to/from YYZ will increase to the point that their hub will become YYZ as well.

I guess we will know for certain when the economy picks up and airlines have an opportunity to reassess the market but unfortunately WestJet appears to be following on the path of Air Canada hub wise and that does not bode well for YEG. As far as the US airlines it is always a crapshoot as they are opportunists with no true investment other than non mainline metal in the majority of cases.

Again I am not an airline insider but common sense would indicate that trend. Maybe some of the experts on this thread have more knowledgeable predictions.

AA has announced it has pulled its Philly flights out of Halifax. No City is immune from lost US flights - including YYC. With more oil firms pulling out and consolidation in the oil patch we might see YYC take some big losses. The only safe Cities as I see it are the big 3.

It appears Westjet is going to fly Suncore employees up to the northern sites at Fort Mac. 100 flights a week up to the aerodrome.

Yup, rumour had been floating around for months and the announcement was delayed due to the Fort Mac fire. Sucks for the Suncor crews. Apparently Suncor will keep the Challenger jet and sell the 3 CRJ's.

Business is business so WS can do whatever it wants, but it would be nice gesture for them to at least interview any Suncor crews who are displaced but this, assuming they meet WestJet's minimums. It would likely be Encore but still be a nice thing to do.

If memory serves the Suncor aircraft is CR9 variety. I know a Canadian airline looking for CR9 equipment. In any event I would advise the Suncor pilots to learn the Clarinet or Saxophone; it comes in handy for their next job interview.

I don't get it.

Should I pass that along to my flight school buddy who is a Captain with them and is dealing with all of this?

The clarinet and saxophone are two instruments used in a jazz ensemble. There is an airline needing to expand their Chorus. This airline is about to lose a lot of pilots as mother Corp is taking 100+ pilots per annum under a new Capacity purchase arrangement.

ETA: this Canadian airline is taking 5 new CR9 and 5 new Q400 this year. This creates a requirement for 75 more pilots.

I also know of another opportunity if Canadians are willing to live in the PHX area. Unfortunately this one I don't know the name of the company hiring.

Apologies, I'm being obtuse as I over heard the information sitting in the YYZT1 Plaza Premium lounge, this lounge is frequented by pilots who spend $400 per annum for all the food and nonalcoholic beverages they can handle.

Maybe with that part of EIA lands not developing as fast as expected the race track became a logical alternative.
The East side of Runway 12/30 and South of the Terminal Apron is the space designated for Port Alberta which has been well developed and is developing well. Three major buildings, two major cargo distribution warehouses are also located there, with new development being planned as an additional 3 lots have been sold totalling 5 million Sq ft.

Hopefully EIA really is liberal with traffic numbers for this sort of project. Looking at the Northlands seating chart, it seems the place seats around 2500 people. I imagine this new racetrack will have a larger grandstand then add in a casino and things can get busy. I see Airport Road and Hwy 19 getting even more congested. Does anyone here have a link to the proposal? Does anyone know of airports around the world with a mall and/or a racetrack type of business right adjacent to the airport?

I was hoping for more business/logistics type buildings going up in the area proposed for the racetrack/casino. I guess time will tell how this goes but really how many casinos do we need in this City.
It's not happening. It already exists (Castrol raceway) but I think peolple just got confused.

EIA isn't getting a race track, it's just buying the land where the race track is. It's doing this so when the twinning of Highway 19 is completed in 2018, they can start installing ILS becons and begin paving the New/Third Runway - Runway 11/29.

As you can see here:
http://corporate.flyeia.com/sites/default/files/files/map_3rdrunway_development_january_15_2016.pdf
The new runway runs straight through the racetrack, with runway being 3530m (11,580 ft) long.

However, They might also just relocate the racetrack, and that could be what people are talking about. Nonethess, preliminary engineering is already done on the runway so it's location/angle of 11/29 isn't changing. Also, work on the Runway 12/30 extention is planned to begin by spring 2018, to extend the runway to 13,220 ft, but it has nothing to do with the Raceway. It's just to allow for more Cargo/Regional arrivals while other aircraft can begin to line up simultaneously.
