Drug have been a problem in that area for as long as I can remember... it's part of the culture that the zombi hoards of homeless people in the area create... so yeah... those pesky homeless people. It seems like there are fights, police, and paramedics over on 200s about 60% of the time that I go over there.
You're really suggesting the shooting of someone is less shocking than the looting of a car by a handful of homeless people? God, you've lost your marbles.

The hate the homeless get on this forum by a handful of users is downright disgusting. It's vile. There's a drug deal gone bad, involving non-homeless people, and some of you think the big story here is how homeless people looted? Well shit! Wasn't there looting during the 2002 Winter Olympics? Isn't there looting whenever a team wins a championship? Yet the homeless are beyond the pale in this scenario? Are you fucking insane?

The pesky homeless people aren't the problem. It's the junkies, often from the suburbs looking to get a fix that ultimately always seem to one-up the crime level in an area that is under-policed. But bums are worse than drug addicts and gang members. Mkay.

Yeah. You lack zero credibility here.

Holiday Inn Parking Structure

Does anyone know what is being done to the parking structure for the old Shilo Inn. They have been cutting big chunks out of it over the last week or so.

I said a drug deal gone bad is not shocking to me. It happens all the time. It doesn't always result in death... but it's not really anything shocking. When you are dealing with crazy ass people who are so addicted to drugs that they will do anything for them, and violent criminals... What do you expect to be happening? You think a drug deal gone wrong is shocking? I don't because I actually expect that to happen... I've known the people and they are not good.

I would probably be shocked if someone operating a hotdog stand was murderd for no reason... and yes it is shocking to me that any person Homless or not would watch something like that happen and their first instinct would be to go lute a persons car rather then try to get help... that is not something that I hear about every day so it's shocking to me... and it's particularly shocking when ai just barley read on here how nice and friendly the Holmes's people around rio grand are... anyone who would do that is a real piece of shit... not to say that the person who committed murder isn't... because that is clearly a worse act... I would never deny that... but shock value and wrong value are two different things.

Also.. the Holmes's people and druggies are one in the same in a lot of cases. At the very least the Homless situation is a big part of what creates the environment for drug dealers in the area to thrive... and I've never even blamed the Holmes people for the situation... I blame the city for creating that environment.. as I have said many many times. We can't Controles the fact that people are homeless but we can control where it exist and the conjestion of the problem by spreading things out and not having all of the cercumstances that make all the Homeless, drugies, homless/drugies want to all hang around there... the problem with the area is the cities fault... the reason people are addicted to drugs and homeless is their own fault... totally.

But yeah. I am going to complain about how annoying they are... I can't even walk half a block from my house to maverick without being asked for money once or twice. I get asked at least 5 times a day... and that is a good day. It really does get annoying and makes me feel like I'm being harassed. I try to be polite to them when I tell them that I don't have any money to give them... but it just wares you out after a while... it's like you get to the point where you just want to start ignoring them... the city should implement no solicitation badges or something.

The homeless situation is an extension to the fact the area is blighted and strongly industrial. Drug addicts tend to frequent areas exactly like that. It's not the homeless people selling the drugs to the people - for the most part (it happens, but let's be honest, the homeless don't have the means for shit like that).

The area is under-policed and underdeveloped, which makes it a breading ground for crime. It just so happens the homeless people are also drawn to areas like that because they're easier to frequent without being hassled by people or police.

But to blame this event, or to make this event, about homeless is just not right. The big issue here is drug addicts, drug dealers and gangs, as is most the crime west of State Street in the city. The homeless only account for a fraction of the violent crime in that area, and probably only a small fraction of drug related crime.

That's the issue we need to look into.

But looting happens. Homeless loot. Affluent people loot. To pass judgment on homeless because of this would be like passing judgment on all white people for looting after their hockey team wins the Stanley Cup or black people for looting after a police shooting.

The blight is only part of the reason that the area has a problem. In fact the blight in the area has decreased dramatically since the 1990s. The long overpasses have been demolished, many abandoned structures have been rehabilitated, demolished, gateway has been highly developed, residential development has gone through the roof, pioneer park has become an event hotspot... quite honestly there is not a whole hell of a lot of blight left in the Rio Grand/Gateway areas. But even with constant improvement and a huge decrease in blight... the problem has still gotten a lot worse.

So yeah, part of the issue is underdevelopment, but that is the one thing that has made progress. The main thing that hampers progress in the area is the Homless and crime problem. The other part of the problem is that all the Homless services are concentrated in the area. Do you seriously think they would all hang around there if there were limited services spread throughout the valley? They would spread out as well and then development would increase exponentially.

There are a few reasons that the crime in the area exist in the area. But it mainly circulates around drugs... not all, but many Homless people in the area are regular drug users... It creates a huge market for the drug dealers, and because its become so well known that the area surrounding the Homless shelter has a huge drug circulation, many non Homless people go there to buy drugs as well. The drug dealers / gangs blend in with the Homless people and use them to shield their operations, because as you've stated there is very little police oversite... but without the large Homless population, there would be much of a reason for the drug dealers and gangs to maintain the type of presence that they currently have in the area...

So yes, a huge part of the problem is the cities unwillingness to address the consentration of Homless shelters.... but luckily the huge interest in the area is forcing their hand.... I don't thing the city wants to see gateway close, because that is exactly what was going to happen if they wouldn't have acted. Besides people not wanting to go there any more, remaining tenants like dicks were threatening to leave... Megaplex isn't really a draw any more. All of their theaters (especially gateway) are very outdated.

As for looting... All looting is bad. But it's one thing to just go and the loot, it's quite another thing to ignore something like what happened and loot a persons car while they are inside dying, instead of trying to get them help... Those people are just as fucked up as the person who committed the murder... So while there really is two stories here. It's just not really all that unbelievable that something like that could happen during a drug deal... but what is unbelievable is that people would behave like that after witnessing this... it's not even the fact that they're homeless... I would think it was just as bad if Federal Heights residence did the same thing... but I'm sorry, I can't help but think that it's ironic that a bunch of homeless people did this right after it was said how kind they are...

And yeah.. I know not all Homless people are bad... maybe I'll study using the word Bums cuz that's really the ones I'm talking about.

The problem is focusing on the homeless like they're some scourge to society. These are human beings who, for the most part, especially to their numbers, just keep to themselves and only prove a nuisance in minor ways. The drug addicts are a much bigger issue - as are the gangs who influence the drug relations.

Where I take issue is when the focus of a shooting, and drug deal gone bad, automatically reverts to homeless bashing despite the fact the homeless not having anything to do with the major potential crime at hand here (at worst, a murder, at best self defense during a drug run). The people going into these neighborhoods to buy drugs and all that junk are not generally the homeless. I'd wager the homeless, like the legitimate groups of people in the area, are often bystanders caught in the crossfire of illegal and sketchy activity.

The real issue continues to be drug use and gang activity - two things that seem to still plague Salt Lake City.

I like this development. I think it's a prime location, it's right between Ballpark and 9th S Trax stations, it's a very underdeveloped neighborhood with huge potential. This plus the proposed apartments on Glotz Ave (if they can get their parking reduced enough) will really bring that neighborhood to life. More people means more eyes on the street, resulting in less crime.

I've been assembling several databases on construction in the city. There are over 2600 multifamily residential units actively under construction and 2200 units that should start construction in the next few months (even more if you count projects like Granary Place that have long had a building permit but appear stalled). Salt Lake could very likely pass the 200,000 population mark by 2018.

Per Jody Gennessy of the DesNews, "the Utah Jazz are planning a public unveiling of the renovation drawing for Vivint Arena on Sept 21." He states, "I haven't seen the renderings of the arena makeover, but the organization believes fans will be excited and surprised by the new concepts"

Construction of the Ridge Senior Living Center is almost finished on Foothill. I like the building's scale on Foothill. Also there is survey on changes to Foothill that closes the end of today.

Options C & F are the only ones that should be considered. The others should be discarded.

Very much agree. Those two options would be a very positive game changer for Foothill, and it's about time. I've been waiting for years to see this happen.

I still wish the Jazz would have taken the New Orleans Hornets offer and traded names. I believe the offer was for $20 Million and some 1st Round picks.

I know we have been the Jazz for a long time but Utah Hornets(Hornetzz) fits the Beehive state.

I disagree, and not for the simple fact hornets build nests and not hives.

While jazz music has nothing to do with Utah, the team name has become iconic. When thinking about Stockton, Malone, Hornacek, Sloan, and the 1997 and 1998 Finals teams, I couldn't imagine not thinking of them as the Utah Jazz. Calling them the Hornets or the "peaks" or whatever ludicrous name the Miller family would come up with would be a shame. Hell, I still wish it was the Delta Center, but I don't have millions of dollars to throw around.

Not every sports team has to link with its geography. The Lakers are iconic and they were named after Minnesota's lakes. Same for the Dodgers and the Arizona Cardinals.
