Meh. Gucci is whatever to me personally. I could see it opening up at Oceanwide Plaza however. Although I do want a Gucci Fiat 500.

^^^ I agree. Gucci is what I like to call "high end filler", meaning, on its own it wouldn't really lure the masses since rappers and others are destroying the brands name single handedly (if I here one more rap song about Gucci, I will scream), but if you were to sandwich it between a LV and Channel or Apple, it would do OK in helping to lure people in. It wouldn't make or break downtown, its just a high end filler.

Let me clarify a bit. Its a great park. Truly is. But. We complain about Pershing square being raised up a few feet from street level and how that park sometimes feel disjointed from the surrounding area and we complain about it having too much concrete. For myself, this park inadvertently does the same thing.

The wrap around gate, aggressive guards, how the gates are sometimes randomly opened and shut at different hours (I once walked by at 4pm on a Thursday and the gates were closed) and how half of the park is pretty much a plaza.

I used to live across the street at the 600 west 9th building. I didn't realize it was a public park until 2 months after I moved in. Somebody on here corrected me way back on the 3.0 or 4.0 page when I said "that would be a great public park" and they said "uummm it is a public park". I honestly thought it was a part of FIDM, 2 of my neighbors thought the same thing.

I didn't know the dog issue bugged that many people. I just thought that was a few people whining on yelp. But I actually prefer it remains dog free. Some owners are sadly careless with droppings.

So you think rappers destroy the brands name single handedly...I guess you are the typical NIMBY mindset most people on here claim to despise. Pathetic at best. Maybe you and others that agree with your sentiments should stop listening. Especially if there is such a narrow mindset.

A more similar comparison would be SoHo, which has gone from an artistic community to a tourist destination filled with literally nothing besides high end globalized brands and clubs.
SoHo, London or SoHo, New York?

Yeah I wish there weren't gates at that park, Spring St. Park, or the new Arts District Park.

If we didn't have such a horrible homeless problem there would be no need to have the gates. There's required in this type of society.

New York. I just bought a place down there and my friends were talking to me about how dead it gets during winter, and how lonely it might be as opposed to the East Village where I lived last.

I'm concerned that retail areas in dt, including the future oceanwide plaza or definitely the swapmeet filled street of broadway, in order to bring in large crowds of ppl....& potential shoppers.....will remain overly dependent on certain days or special events. That's the case with LA live & the moments when sports events, concerts or theme days take place.

To go beyond that....to move to the next level....dt has to be the location of a HUGE number of local residents....hundreds of thousands of ppl, as exist in those cities with thriving shopping scenes. Even more so if stores need ppl walking through the front door who have lots of cash & credit cards.

Not sure why retractable gates aren't used more often.

South Coast Plaza has a Gucci boutique, one of the largest. That's all I have to say.

I don't see the point being made here. South Coast Plaza is the highest sales grossing center in the country and arguably the most attractive location in CA for high-end retailers to set up shop. How does that make a case that a retailer like Gucci would be interested in DTLA?

The point he/she was making is that it doesn't kill a neighborhood.

I believe that the current estimated population of downtown is approximately 60,000. If the current housing construction continues along with strong absorption then the 2020 population may well surpass 100,000. I believe to reach the level of critical mass that you describe downtown will need further growth, and Eastern Koreatown/Westlake will have to further gentrify along with Silverlake, Echo Park, Highland Park, Exposition Park, West Adams etc. Those additional people in these areas will support what you and I would envision as a truly vibrant core

Don't forget about tourists, who likely spend far more on average than residents do. DTLA still has a paltry number of hotel rooms compared to the downtowns in other top cities.

I figured somebody would get extremely butt hurt fairly quick.

The REAL tragedy though is how my entire statement went RIGHT over your head. Not understanding the definition of hyperbole or sarcasm and being able to peep it out in a conversation as you read, or not understanding my character, as everyone else on here knows, I'm VERY light hearted and sarcastic with the things I say until somebody comes at me the wrong way.

RE-read what I said and try not to pull at your own heart strings when doing so. You'll understand what I was doing and saying (being VERY sarcastic). If you're still puzzled after that, its ok, some of us tend to struggle with interpreting written (typed) words. Maybe we need to give lessons on this thread about Sarcasm and Hyperboles since people need their hands held with detailed explanations a lot lately

And dismiss me with the "narrow mindset" BS. 29 and Dominican, I'm not old and I grew up in the REAL culture of the 80s and 90s and not this garbage that people are idolizing today.

I agree. I mean i get why its gated now but It was just a visual "Shock" that I experienced I guess you can say. Moving from Suburbia, where the parks aren't gated 99% of the time, to the parks downtown being gated.... just from my personal experience and my neighbors who thought the same, I actually thought this specific park was private and part of FIDM, doesn't help that FIDM seems to use this park as their own playground sometimes (or at least that was the case when I first moved downtown years ago), once seen the park closed off to the public but students were sketching and etc. in the park. Partly the reason for my confusion.

I hate the gates but understand why they are there...... But then it begs the question... What is suburbia doing to curve this from happening, that downtown cant ? I've seen cops and sheriffs shoo shoo people away after dark in parks in Long Beach (minus the horrible civic center park), Lakewood, Cerritos and Bellflower, Homeless or not, if the park is closed, you're being shooed away regardless. Works successfully without the parks being gated.

Most important Downtown has over 500000 daily commuter and the number is growing.
That's nearly 10 times more than the population.

These people like to go out after work and they spend money.. a lot of it.
