Sad news in many ways but good news. I really wish we could move it or have incorporated it somehow.

Let's reconsider the Cloverdale bridge! Imagine better #design strategies than tearing down a perfectly good bridge!

Come on... the consultations are over, the debate is over, the contracts are signed, construction is underway, the injunction failed. We've already imagined better:

A new cable-stayed bridge that supports LRT for a large area of the city that also includes a new multi-use path, presumably with a better surface for more users than the old wooden deck.

It even has a name: Tawatinâ

Has Manasc Isaac Tweeted about tearing down a "perfectly good bridge" at walterdale? I mean, that one isn't even going to acommodate a whole new mode when it's finished - just an extra lane, wider sidewalks and no more metal grate.

^ As much as I think the old Walterdale should go, at least fighting to keep that one is more understandable at this point.

Transit, water infrastructure funding agreement for Alberta two weeks away, Amartjeet Sohi says
http://www.edmontonsun.com/2016/08/17/tr...berta-two-weeks-away-amartjeet-sohi-says

Quote:
Federal Infrastructure Minister Amarjeet Sohi said Wednesday he expects a long-awaited agreement to begin flowing project funding to Alberta could be signed by the end of the month.

Sohi said his department has been ready to move ahead with the money since early July but is waiting on Alberta Infrastructure to finalize a list of projects.

“Minister (Brian) Mason is working with Calgary and Edmonton and other cities to compile a list of projects,” Sohi said. “And within the next couple of weeks we will be able to sign an agreement to get the money flowing all throughout the province, as well as going retroactively to April 2016 to support projects that are already underway.”

The agreement in question focuses on public transit and water infrastructure. Alberta’s share is expected to be about $347 million for transit and $197 million for water.

“The list is being complied,” Sohi said. “I had a look at the preliminary list. It has projects from all over the province. Very critical needs of refurbishment, repairing of the infrastructure.”

As well, there is about $700 million remaining to be spent under the Building Canada Fund program started under the former Conservative government. Project proposals have ben submitted for that pool of money and final details are being discussed, a provincial spokeswoman said.

Major Changes to LRT Paid Park & Ride

More reserved paid stalls, September 1

August 30, 2016

Edmonton Transit System (ETS) is implementing council-approved changes to Park & Ride service at Belvedere, Century Park, Clareview and Stadium LRT stations on September 1, 2016.

These changes include:

Increasing the number of reserved paid stalls;
Reserved stalls are now $50/month. This is the first increase since 2011 and largely covers lot maintenance costs;
Introducing some hourly paid parking meters to encourage short transit trips (coming later in the fall).
At Century Park, 75 per cent of the stalls will be reserved. With free parking limited, riders are encouraged to contact Impark for a reserved stall, carpool if accessing free stalls, use bus-only transit centres with free parking, or take the bus for the duration of their trip. Riders are encouraged to plan their trip using real-time bus information at takeETS.com.

Across the system, ETS now offers approximately 1,700 free stalls and 2,300 reserved paid stalls at the above-mentioned LRT lots.

People who typically park at the LRT centres also can try free express Park & Ride locations at:

Eaux Claires transit centre (97 St. & 157 Ave.)
Meadows transit centre (17 St. & 40 Ave.)
Lewis Farms transit centre (87 Ave. & west of Anthony Henday Dr.)
Davies lot (86 St. & 61 Ave.)
The changes help ensure ETS is providing the best service possible while maintaining good value for the tax dollars invested.

Has Council turned down the Katz request for parking in the lots North of the arena yet? If not there is a source of reserved parking for 5000 people lol. The City might lose some of the revenue from the reserved stalls in its own lots though...people would not take the train if they could get a spot north of the arena for 70 a month.

What nobody is talking about is what the effect is going to be on the winspear/aga/citadel. If the end of cheap evening parking is coming those organizations are going to be in a world of hurt.

But expensive parking is a good thing right?

^^still to be decided on I believe.

^hardly, if anything they are going to benefit from increased activities from a parking revenue standpoint. Do you really think many of their demo are going to park in a cold desolate lot and walk outside? Very few me thinks. Their rates can move up a bit and hopefully more folks will arrive by LRT.

Expensive parking certainly is better than free or cheap parking from an urban planning standpoint.

I'd also like to reiterate that if our biggest concern with transit is that there isn't enough free parking, then we're doing something fundamentally wrong with transit, planning, and how we design and build our city; not to mention how we set expectations with citizens.

I agree. Residential bus routes are key to feeding into LRT or to Bus "HUBS" that have express service to downtown. I wonder what happened to all the recommendations from the last bus route study.

re: Century Park

1. There is a wait list of thousands that this allocation of paid parking won't even fully address.

2. The parking lot is full by 7am already from commuters fighting to get a spot.

The reality is that this changes little the number of stalls that are full at any given time throughout the day. It just allows people to pay to reserve said spot. If you were driving in 8am to get on the train, the lack of available parking would be the same thing.

Well, on that note, the Winspear does have their automated parking garage plan to go ahead if parking rates do go up and it justifies building such.
