Domestic up 2.3% to 1,125,670 (up 24,800)
Transborder up 1.3% to 290,531 (up 3,600) First month of growth in 2016.
International up 9.1% to 136,367 (up 11,400) Hainan, Edelweiss and Westjet having an impact.

YTD is up 1.3% now.

June has been revised to being up 1.3% from 1.0%.
This is great considering how the economy is. I'm especially happy to see that transborder is back in the positives again!

I hope for YYC's sake it's doing "very good." With the recent bilateral with China grinding to a standstill there are so few frequencies left that the Chinese Airlines are being forced to look at each route more closely to maximise their returns. China didn't get the increase in frequencies they wanted. With other routes being sought, there is a risk of some frequencies being shifted around to achieve better returns. On the other hand, YYC-PEK may possibly increase up to 5 weekly based on what's left. Hainan is the biggest mystery as to what they are going to do because they have 2 unused frequencies from their allotment. All other airlines, more or less, are now capped at their current levels for possibly a few years. I wouldn't say any particular route between Canada to China on a Chinese carrier is safe from having cuts bar some obvious really strong ones. However, Air Canada (and Westjet for that matter) has plenty of unused frequencies. AC seems to be more interested in other markets though.

With the (proposed?/upcoming?) easing of Visa requirements any chance we will see MEX-YYC in the near future? It's doable with AeroMexico's 737's which currently fly to YYZ, YUL and YVR.

I'm flying to MEX next week (red-eye via YVR). Looking forward to my first AM flight, have heard good things.

Oh it's more than doable for the aircraft, with WS and WG flying their planes to Costa Rica and all.

But I definitely don't see MEX for YYC in the near to medium term, do you Johnny?

Waiting to see what kind of negative spin 'you know who' puts on it. But yeah, considering the economy, not bad at all.

Looks like YYC may be benefiting from the direct services cuts from elsewhere on the prairies. More transits through our hub possibly happening, because O&D must be down given the economy.

The growth is likely a combination of new international flights resulting in larger origin market, plus large destination market as people vacation in Calgary (destination) as opposed to Calgarians going out to vacation. Finally, the dollar is slightly better this month compared to last, combined with aggressive price discounting from WS on the transborder front has resulted in Calgarians deciding to take a peak period vacation.

If it was a result of cuts in other airports it would most likely be YQR, YEG or YXE I would think. I wonder what the numbers are like from those ones?

The numbers for YEG suggest that decreases in transborder traffic are not being transferred domestic traffic but rather are being dropped from the market all together. I haven't the chance to dissect the numbers for YQR and YXE yet, but I expect similar situation (origin traffic to choosing to not fly rather than switching from transborder to domestic buckets).

The transborder numbers for YYC August are the result of deep discounting by the market leader, WS, rather than any other market factor.

I very much appreciated WS' deep transborder discounting this summer. Couple of nice trips.

I would say AC did a lot too, isn't SFO new, and LAX got switched back from rouge?

If transborder flights from YEG get dropped it's not adding to transborder traffic from YYC, whether by people driving down to YYC or via transfer flights? I'm not disagreeing, just verfiying.

Hey YYC people! My wife and I will be doing a overnight stop in February on our way to Cabo. Our flight in the morning leaves at 7:00 am. We are arriving from YQR at around 6:30 pm. We would like to book one of the hotels right at the airport, but because I am a cheap — and since we have to be awake nice and early, I was hoping to find a code or a website that could give us way better rates than what the hotels are showing. Anyone know of such things that I could access?

BTW - sure looking forward to visiting the new terminal when we fly out of there.

Thanks in advance,
Robag
