I'm in favour of not developing the Langara Golf Course. It's a huge plot of publicly owned open space in the middle of the city in an area that is going to get more dense in the years ahead. Whether it remains a golf course, though, is something that I think merits a longer-term conversation.
I agree that golf is an activity that appears to accessible to a small-ish strata of the population and there is no shortage of private golf courses in the region. However, I don't know what to propose in place of the golf course while still maintaining it as a public park. A half-and-half redesign to create passive- and active-use spaces could be great. I'm imagining the active spaces could include preservation of the orbital running path and a pitch and putt area, plus several baseball diamonds and soccer fields, etc., which would help alleviate the chronic shortage of field sports venues for organized leagues (Urban Rec, etc.). For the passive spaces, a combination of fields, natural wooded areas, and potentially a major pond/lake (maybe even with paddle boats!) could be a great addition.
Queen Elizabeth Park is nearby, but due to its grade and the surprisingly extensive network of roads, it actually is pretty limited for useful space.
