The best spot for the hockey house is the rail lands and it may happen , look at Saskatoon where they put theres and all the heart ache about its location

Regina could use a larger rink, the RRI would be a great place to build around! Think of the Edmonton ICE District and how that is reshaping their downtown.

As much as it would be cool to have a downtown arena in the former railyard, I absolutely would not want to see the massive parking lot that would accompany it.

This is no longer done for downtown arenas. E.g. MTS Centre:

Any plan would have to include parking structures with street level active uses and perhaps uses above. As well their could be linkages to present and future parkades south of the track. This parking is mostly available nights and weekends.

Also... Just read an article... The Federal government is kicking in $30 mill to the U of R to open an innovation centre at the College Ave campus that the U of R will be matching. Not sure what that means for the Conexus proposal that was previously talked about, but good news for the U of R. Could be a bit of Goodale influence...

University of Regina receives $30 million for upgrades, renovations Twitter size By Blake Lough

The University of Regina’s historic College Avenue campus is the recipient of a multi-million dollar boost in funding from the federal government’s Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment Fund.

A total of $30.1 million in funding was announced Friday, with $27.6 million going towards renovations to the 100-year-old College Avenue campus. The building will be modernized in order to house the new Canadian Institute for Science and Innovation Policy.

An additional $2.4 million was granted to the university to upgrade the existing laboratory building on its main campus.

Parkland College’s emergency services training site in Melville, Sask. received $100,000 for the installation of an electric and pressurized water system.
Dave Button, vice-president of administration at the U of R, said the $30 million contributed by the federal government will be matched by the university.

“What it means for the university is to protect and preserve our heritage campus here and increase the functionality of a student space that is so important to us,” Button said.

Minister of Public Safety Ralph Goodale, speaking on behalf of Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, Navdeep Bains, said the investment will have continued payoffs for Saskatchewan and the rest of the country in the future.

“This once-in-a-generation investment by the Government of Canada is a historic down payment on the government’s vision to position Canada as a global centre for innovation,” said Goodale. “This investment will create conditions that are conducive to innovation and long-term growth, which will in turn keep the Canadian economy globally competitive.”

Renovations to the College Avenue campus will begin in earnest in October. It is expected to be completed within two years.

They have a $10 million donation campaign which is mostly raised. A big chunk comes from Conexus, and then there are a number of smaller sources, I understand.

Couple of questions on Grasslands/Harbour Landing.

Does anyone know what is going in ground level on what appears to be apartments next to the Canadian Brewhouse? The second floor has the yellow walls up but the bare steel frame on the main is still open. Is this unsold ground floor retail? Anyone heard when this is to be completed? Seems like they have been working on it forever.

In the same area, the new building that will house Knight Archer is going up. Is it all parking lot behind that up to the berm where the wall is or will there be another building next to (west of) London Drugs?

Good progress on the second Harbour Point building there as well.

The top floors are condos and the bottom floor is retail. I'll be opening a store in that building next year. We get the keys in May and hope to be open mid June or beginning of July. I do know all the businesses that will be opening there, however because they haven't been formally announced, I can't disclose.

Some of the first leasing was fast food outlets, one coffee chop and a nail salon.
