I agree. And one can quibble with the methodologies used to rank cities, similar to University rankings we see all the time. However, they generally are aimed at an overriding goal (from a cities point of view) to attract people (employees) and companies to that city. i do think what is missing in Edmonton is a conscious decision and strategy to target some of the elements of such rankings... not for the sake of making a list but to actually improve livability for current and future citizens. we need to get the homicide rate down, we need more amenities, particularly around the river valley and we need public transportation that works. some of this is in the works but there is still even a fight to get BRT, LRT and separated bike lanes going in the city... things every city on that list has or is visibly working toward.
