Child Friendly Edmonton pilot project aims to make downtown more playful

When you think about Edmonton’s downtown, is it a place for kids and families to play? Child Friendly Edmonton seeks to make the downtown core more playful through a series of upcoming events focused on creative free play experiences for children.

At four free drop-in events, play animators will facilitate a range of experiences for children of all ages that will include imaginative, self-directed play that promotes physical activity.

All events will run from 12-3 p.m. Parents must supervise their children while encouraging them to experience unstructured play.

The City of Edmonton is identified as a Child Friendly city which means Edmonton has adopted the articles of the Rights of a Child as identified by the United Nations. Child Friendly Edmonton is a City Council Initiative that aims to ensure children’s rights are protected, needs are being considered and their voices are heard on decisions about where they live, learn and play.

Plan ahead as thousands of racers take to Edmonton streets August 20 & 21

Expect major road and transit impacts, especially Downtown

August 18, 2016

On Sunday, August 21, plan ahead and expect major delays as thousands of racers will take to the streets as marathon, half marathon, 10K and 5K walk/run routes start Downtown and wind through several of Edmonton’s historic and scenic neighbourhoods.

Road Closures and Traffic Delays
Saturday, August 20:
Full closure of Jasper Ave between 97-99 St. all day. Use 102 Ave as an alternate route.

Sunday, August 21:
The race route start and ends at the Shaw Conference Centre (97 Street & Jasper Ave), causing a full closure of Jasper Ave between 95-108 St. from 6am-8pm.

Partial road closures downtown will be on 108 St, 102 Ave, 118 St, and 104 Ave/Stony Plain Road. Expect major traffic delays Downtown and west to 136 St., including Stony Plain Road, between 9:30am-2:30pm.

Additional partial road closures on the rest of the route:

East of Downtown on Jasper Ave, 82 St, 112 Ave, 76 St, 110 Ave, 75 St, Ada Blvd, 40 St, 105 Ave, 30 St, 111 Ave and 32 St.
South west on St. George’s Cres, Ravine Dr, 142 St, 89A Ave, 140 St, 87 Ave, 137 St, Valleyview Cres, Valleyview Dr, 95 Ave, Riverside Dr and Summit Dr.

ETS Detours and Bus Stop Closures
Many Downtown routes will be detoured.

Jasper Ave Routes: From Saturday, August 20 at 6am to Sunday, August 21 at 8pm, detoured routes are 2, 3, 5, 100, 120 and 308.

Downtown and Around the City: On Sunday, August 21 from the start of service until approx. 5pm, detoured routes are 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 15, 57, 86, 100, 112, 130, 140, 141, 142 and 151.

Parking
Parking restrictions on the event route start on Saturday, August 20 at 6am. Weekend rates at downtown parkades and meters are available. Please obey all posted signs.

Neighbourhood Access
Many areas of the race routes will allow local access only. Plan ahead and expect delays.

Marathon Info
The Edmonton Marathon will welcome thousands of spectators to cheer on runners in this the 25th running of the event. Record breaking registration will see over 4,000 participants hit the pavement during this active family festival weekend. There’s still time to sign up at the Sports Expo from the Shaw Conference Centre. For event info on where to cheer and how to register or volunteer, visit edmontonmarathon.ca.

Priority is the mech, so should be pretty smooth

Most of that cost will be labour. but based on current trends in pricing it will either be way under or way over. Last tender we had go out was a 60% spread.

There is a good chance the work will require closing a floor down and removing the ceilings.

Kamloops airport to Valemount is about a 2 hour shorter drive, plus you don't have to deal with the park

True but marketing could have the tour groups come through here or YVR and do Marmot and Valemont.

Possibly, but BC's tourism infrastructure is far superior to AB's, this could be incorporated into their already very successful tour routes. The North Thompson / Caribou is crawling with European tourists in the summer. In the winter you could start at Kelowna and do the Okanagan hills, Sun Peaks then Valemount

This project could be decades away anyways, given how Jumbo went

Not likely to be delayed. Seems the BC government is in a rush to get tourist dollars since Gas exports not happening anytime soon. What Alberta should be getting on with is the East Slopes ski area proposed sometime back. That will give Edmonton an air lift for sure - making us closest major airport to East Slopes, Marmot and Valemount. Europeans could do the 3 of them in order.

Refresh my memory, which Eastern Slopes ski proposal are you talking about? Was this the Folding Mountain Village project from the early 1970's? The only other recent Alberta ski proposal that I've heard about in the last 30 or so years was the reject Mt. Shark/Tent Ridge/Mt. Sparrowhawk complex in the Spray Lakes Kananaskis area...

140 cities worldwide were in this and I'm pretty sure Edmonton was not in it. Calgary has a knack for getting their name into the hat. They can beat their chests all they want, it's no different than a rural Saskatchewan kid being the smartest kid in his class, consisting of 7 children.

Not to mention, livable doesn't equate to affordable in this survey, something that in my opinion is part of livable.

The Purcell mountains are incredible from a terrain standpoint. Also ~3 hours from Calgary would have made it very accessible. It had many negative factors such as interference with wildlife habitats and the potential to spawn development in an area that should be left alone. So I don't think this is a better location, it's a less impactful location for sure
