I don't know the first thing about cargo shipping in Canada, but at first glance I find it surprising that Moncton's numbers are so high and that Edmonton's are so low. Everyone else seems about right.

Washrooms doubling as tornado storm shelters is ubiquitous in American MidWestern airports but I've never seen in any other Canadian city besides Saskatoon before..
If those "shelters" are located on the second floor and post-security, I would say: "LOL!!!!" and "Best of luck to you." (Especially if YXE (or any other airport) encounters an F4 or 5-scale tornado.)

Otherwise, get the hell into the basement along a west wall.

I believe Edmonton is in competition with Calgary and this explains why their numbers are so low.

Moncton is of course competing with Halifax, but our airport is aggressively pursuing cargo traffic, and is a terminus for Purolator, Fed Ex and UPS. Our central location in the Maritimes helps.

Having said all this, I don't think that Stats Can table accurately captures all the air freight out of YHZ. Halifax Stanfield sends a lot of seafood to Europe and the Middle East, and I don't think that is being reflected here. I know for a fact that YHZ has greater cargo numbers than YQM, but the difference between the two airports is not substantial.

I don't know how you can say that without knowing the structure of the building.

I've only seen those signs before in Denver airport. My thought at the time was in the instance of a tornado which generates tons of wind and suction, the last place I would want to be is near a toilet.

MonctonRad is correct:

YHZ 32,020 tonnes

YQM 25,129 tonnes

Qatar Airways Cargo now operates a weekly B777-200 freighter out of YHZ to Doha with a stop in Zaragoza, Spain on top of Korean Air Cargo's B747-400 freighter which has been operating twice weekly to Seoul, South Korea.

Halifax airport doubles lobster shipments in two years
THE CHRONICLE HERALD
Published July 18, 2016 - 6:52pm

International demand for Nova Scotia lobster and other local seafood boosting air cargo figures at Halifax Stanfield International Airport.

The airport had a record 32,020 metric tonnes of cargo in 2015.

More important, the dollar value of that cargo was $447 million, up from $317 million two years earlier, says Ian Arthur, the airport authority’s chief commercial officer.

“Live lobsters have gone from $63 million in 2013 to $130 million in 2015,” he said.

Arthur said the authority is shifting from using metric tonnes as a measure of cargo to dollar value.

“Metric tonnes is a measure but not really the measure that impacts the economy and the airport is here to facilitate high value, time sensitive cargo like seafood and also some high value airplane parts because there is a lot of aviation industry here at the airport,” he said.

The airport has 17 carriers that handle cargo daily with three main freighter flights a week.

I wouldn't worry about SkydivePilot's dig against YXE jmt18325, he's had a major hate on anything about Saskatoon for years and years (Regina vs. Saskatoon rivalry maybe?) and he's still mad about Regina loosing Delta airlines service while Saskatoon has retained Delta.

Saskatoon's YXE airport was recently rated North America's most improved airport after its renovation and expansion. I believe YXE washrooms apparently have concrete reinforcement to allow for protection against storms. There would not be enough time for all post security passengers to exit second floor if only seconds allowed for safety in a direct hit of terminal by a tornado..

speaking of weather and air travel..
hail cracked an Air Canada plane's flight deck window on a flight into Calgary a couple weeks ago.. it made an emergency landing in Lethbridge..

2015 numbers have been out a while for the major airports and I updated my 2014 Top North American Intl Airports list:

Pearson still has a solid hold on second on the continent with the only major movement being LAX vaulting over MIA for 3rd.

YVR and YUL in strong position to hold their position and even make some moves as O'Hare, Newark and Hartsfield look vulnerable.

I'm shocked Calgary isn't on the list. Their 2015 numbers (from the YYC airport website) was 15,475,759 which would easily place them in 5th place on this cart and shove everyone down.

Sorry this might be a really stupid question, but is this total pax or just international pax? Reason being that I thought Atlanta was busiest in the world, unless this is international only?

International pax only guys...YYC is a secondary airport in that aspect, compared to YYZ, YUL and YVR.

YYC had 4.5 million intl passengers last year, 3 million of which were to the US.

Still, pretty impressive for Canada. A tiny nation of 36 million, and our top 3 airports are in the top 11 busiest in NA in terms of intl pax. It illustrates two things:

1. how huge the US domestic numbers are vs the intl numbers. Megahubs such as ORD, IAH and ATL have similar numbers to YUL and YVR, with DFW having less.

2. How much Canadians like to travel abroad, especially Quebecers. That number alongside YUL is 2/3 the total passenger count. The highest ratio on that list.

Thanks. I always think of LAX as the second busiest for INTL pax in NA, behind JFK. YYZ.

How do Mexican airports rate? I would have guessed CUN would be on there, and maybe MEX?

Charlottetown Airport numbers up almost 20% to date.
Air traffic up

Many of the visitors are arriving by air, up 15 per cent from last June and almost 20 per cent for the year.
With one of the Northumberland ferries out of commission, traffic from Wood Islands was down almost seven per cent.
The number of visitors from the U.S. is up, as well as travellers from Ontario and Quebec.

Did you actually think YYC was the 5th busiest airport in North America, busier than Chicago, New York Newark, Houston or Atlanta?

Yes this is just international only. Canadian airports are much MUCH smaller than US airports when domestic is factored in. Pearson is the second largest international gateway, however its 42 million total PAX doesn't even come close to Atlanta's 101 million. YYZ wouldn't crack the top 10 in the US, let alone YVR. YYC or YUL for example would be around the 30th largest airport in the US.

Probably quite high. I'll try and throw MEX on there too, maybe CUN, but venturing too far down into central america I'm worried that the info will be weak and the numbers will be weird since there's almost no domestic flying in small nations like El Salvador, Belize or Panama.

I wasn't aware his stats were only international passengers.

I'm not surprised - I tried booking a reservation on NFL while I was home in NS over July/August and they were busy as heck. The only crossings I could get space on were the late night ones which didn't work for me.
