I'm really glad that New Mosaic Stadium turf has everything it needs now with not only the football lines but also lines for other sports. This will allow the stadium to be multi-use for other sports groups. All rugby or soccer groups that want to make use of the stadium can try & put in a bid to make full use of the facility when football isn't in play. Some day if these same groups wish to pony up and put even a small fraction of a percent of money where their lips are and put in some finances into the stadium too then they can have more say in what sports are to be played there, as for now it looks like football reigns supreme in Canada's newest & best sporting cathedral.

Was the new Regina stadium originally envisioned as a football stadium or a soccer stadium or dual purpose?

Some things would need to be relocated or eliminated (e.g. Wanderer Grounds), and maybe some streets would go underground. It would be more expensive than a suburban location, but probably a much nicer and more useful venue in the long run.

Large concerts are often held in this area (for crowds up to 50,000 or so) and it's walking distance to a bunch of stuff.
I would hate to see a good downtown park replaced by a stadium. I am sure that park gets a lot of use by families. Are there any shopping centers in decline near downtown that could hold a stadium? They already have lots of paved parking. Putting stadiums in shopping centers is a growing trend in many places. It is something to consider.

I'd imagine a somewhat stripped down version of Tim Hortons Field as something of a model... it cost $146 million. Maybe knock the seating down to 20,000 seats, eliminate some of the costlier elements like the tall western grandstand with its upper deck, and perhaps the costs could be reined in somewhat, possibly making a private venture feasible.

As cjones noted though, perhaps partnering with universities might open the door to leveraging some public sector assistance. The University of Manitoba was an integral part of getting IGF off the ground, and I'm pretty sure the U of R is involved in NMS.
Columbus Crew Stadium (22,255 seats) was built for $28.5 million ($40.5 million in todays dollars). Saputo Stadium (20,801 seats) was built for $47 million. Not everybody has to spend $150-300 million on a new stadium. It can be done without being primitive.

you could easily build a bare bones CFL stadium with 23,000 seats for 100M. but that's about as cheap as it's gonna get done. The original bmo was 60M and today without the roof you're looking at a 110M stadium.

If you were to build a smaller stripped down THF style stadium out of the same aluminum materials bmo and saputo is primarily made from you would have a stadium for half of winnipegs price tag and 1/3rd of reginas. I'm sure you could even have a clubs or 2, a row of loge seating and a full strip of luxury suits for that price.

It clearly isn't really multi-purpose because they decided to have permanent football lines on the turf. Migs, you may not think it is an issue, but the playing surface is an important component of a sports venue. It's a shame they didn't do what Winnipeg (and practically every other football stadium) did and go to painted lines. Hosting higher level soccer will not be possible with football lines.

It will be fine for community sports, but do you need a $300m stadium for that?

Beautiful stadium. A shame they cheaped out on that element. It's pretty rare these days to go to permanent lines. It wouldn't have been able to host the women's World Cup or the u20 World Cup from a few years ago.

Build a bridge and get over it....

I for one am happy that Regina/Saskatchewan aren't following in the footsteps of Winnipeg and others. This is a FOOTBALL stadium, that just happens to be able to host amateur soccer.

Many people are not going to get over it because its a permanent mistake and is a glaring oversight.

To say its a football stadium that happens to be able to host amateur soccer. That is factually incorrect. It was billed as a multi purpose stadium capable of hosting profesional and international soccer and perhaps other things like rugby and lacrosse. Stadium directors still claim it as a profesional multi purpose venue, but it wont get approval to host major sports other than football.

As far as New Mosaic, the perforated metal once installed over the ramps & stairs will finish it very nicely.

Over Aluminium siding? Yes I do. It's a bargain basement stadium. Wrap some cheap materials around it to make it look round. Nothing speacial. Knock Rogers all you like but it's a 4 season Stadium not to mention built 25 years ago.

No offence but your post makes no sense.

Disagree. To me it's merely lines on a field, the soccer lines are irrelevant to me, last weekend was the first time I noticed that McMahon has soccer lines too & the only reason I noticed is because I specifically looked for it. Meh, to each their own.

Quit your bitching. Anyone who actually thinks this is a multi purpose stadium, can buy this bridge I own in Brooklyn. This is a FOOTBALL stadium.

Very mature. Bridge in brooklyn you own blah blah blah. You sound like donald trump ignoring facts.

Look. I get people from regina think their stadium is absolutely perfect and can do no wrong.

Its a gorgeous facility. Probably the best in canada

Having said that it is not perfect. The permanent lines were a questionable decision and the exterior finishing was average. Average exterior finishing is better than most in Canada, because most stadiums dont even have exterior finishings.

You have an awesome stadium. Its not perfect though. Stop "bitching" when people are discussing in here.

This is really the bottom line IMO. The stadium was clearly built to for one tenant only, and any other sports uses (soccer, field hockey, rugby, whatever else) are... let's face it... nice, but purely incidental. This is simply reflective of the reality that Saskatchewan only has one sports team tenant that actually needs a stadium built on that scale.

Such was the case for winnipeg and hamilton too though.
