I wonder why they picked Saransk?
No idea either.

BTW that stadium will be scaled down to less than 30k after the WC.

The one it's replacing looks like your average CIS football stadium.

Ah yes, I see... from 45K to a permanent capacity of 28K. Sounds pretty much like a typical new-era CFL stadium, maybe that's why they put the maple leaf there

I think without a big event like the World Cup, this stadium would not happen, and sadly I feel like its the same for Halifax. Unless there was a WC, Commonwealth Games, the City/ Province is just going to drag its feet and nothing will get done.

Halifax? Commonwealth Games? Might be some history there.

It's likely true, though. The Russian government is completely keen on building sports facilities across the country in an attempt to improve the overall condition of sport in that country. They went on a massive spree of building ice hockey arenas in communities across the country as they had a relatively scarce number compared to the number of players. Since then their junior programs have substantively improved access and competitiveness. The same could be said for a lot of their sporting programs. The Canadian government hasn't shown the same interest in funding the large-scale sports facilities because of the whole professional/franchise aspect, something which Russia cares substantively less about optics-wise.

Because of Canada's crop of current stadiums I can't imagine a Canadian WC bid would introduce any new builds at all, depending on how much the CSA and different Governments want to fund the event. It would be nice to have a city on the East Coast play host to some matches but I can't see it happening right now.

I think a world cup would be a kick in the but halifax needs to build its cfl stadium. They would get federal funding based on the world cup and would have a legacy tennant for the future.

Heck Calgary may not be built till 2026 so that would be a new build too!

I'm not saying it isn't a good thing, it's just not something that really enhances the fan experience.
Well, the Riders have a pretty big advantage on this front right now anyway, and they've been even worse than the Bombers over the past couple seasons.

I don't think there'll be a significant difference between the two, but the new stadium is more specifically designed to encourage volume, which is going to be a huge factor for the Riders even more so than it already is.

Wouldn't a stadium of that size typically need, you know...a tenant?

It is a given for most observers that the only reason Hfx is not in the CFL is a stadium.

Halifax CFL team. The CFL's elusive 10th team to balance out the divisions and schedule.

First glimpse of the 500 capacity general admissions lounge at New Mosaic Stadium. They are using some of the old colored wooden benches from the old stadium. Nostalgic look, I like it.

^^^

That actually looks much better then the renderings of the lounge. The renders made the colors look like daycare. The wood look aged and the vintage numbers are a nice touch. Interesting to see how the rest of the space is put together and programed. Overall it looks good.

2 1/2 hour weather delay tonight meant a 10 pm start in Winnipeg, and the stadium still looked 3/4 full at almost 1 am, on a Wednesday night. Bomber fans are da bomb!

It wasn't 3/4 full.

Not to take anything away from the Bomber fans and their awesome perseverance tonight, but that's an entirely separate topic from the comparison of the two fan bases/atmosphere.

^ I read that approximately 17,500 of the 24,041 stayed to watch the game. Pretty damn good.

The only way they will get a stadium is a large event like the Commonwealth games or the World Cup. A World Cup will more than likely mean the feds fund stadiums and stadium upgrades where needed and Halifax will be first in line for a new stadium.

As you said if there is a stadium, Halifax will probably be granted a CFL team the same day and they will start playing the day the Stadium if finished.

^ Yeah... I'm sure a CFL franchise would do well, but nowhere near well enough to pay for the capital costs of a stadium. Either the governments build it or it doesn't happen.

Best I can imagine for private contribution is maybe a long-term loan repayable by team owners for 1/3 the cost of a middling-level $180 million stadium.

I'm not sure why an major event is needed to pay for a stadium in Halifax, though... Man and Sask got new stadiums built without having to spend even more money hosting an international sports event.
