I haven't been back in over two years now but the city seems to be getting a lot more interesting, and the changes are accelerating. The prominent parts of downtown that used to have low-end mom and pop type stores with parking lots in behind them are now getting higher-end shops and the side streets are filling in with buildings. The amount of surface parking downtown is really dwindling, which is probably essential for the area to be really successful. Neighbourhoods that had declined to the point of basically being suburban bedroom communities by the 90's are now quickly regaining foot traffic and commercial activity. There are now 4 or 5 busy neighbourhoods with interesting shops, etc. worth exploring as a visitor whereas around 2000 or so there were only really 2 good ones plus a few others that had interesting architecture but not a whole lot going on.

Halifax has a lot of potential as an older city with a large urban core. There are hundreds of lots in areas like the North End where infill buildings can be built without really disturbing anything, and those neighbourhoods have inherited good "bones" in the form of small blocks, narrow streets, mixed uses/zoning, and plentiful public spaces. Not many North American cities seem to have had much success in replicating those things in completely new neighbourhoods.

J., G. and I went to Matturday Wright Live tonight, Matt Wright's comedy show at Yellowbelly Brewery. It's stand-up, sketches, improv, and musical guests. Great time - and a lovely, lazy Sunday evening downtown.

• Video Link

Walking down to Yellowbelly.

The show itself was awesome. There were four stand-up routines, four sketches, and three improv sessions. Hilarious stuff - they even brought Paddy Daly from VOCM's Open Line up on stage and one of the improv sessions was making fun of the radio show. The infamous "Roxanne" who called in ages ago to complain about the government putting condoms in the back of cabs, because no one has 🞵🞵🞵 in the back of cabs, and by the end of the call she'd admitted she's basically always getting it on in the back of cabs.

Two of the sketches were cutely local - one girl talking about Vienna Sausages having a competition on to win a generator. "If this was up on the mainland, it'd be a trip to Florida. If it was down in the states, it'd be some all-inclusive in Vegas. Here... a 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 generator. But I s'pose it makes sure, can't go to Florida, it'd 🞵🞵🞵🞵 up me EI." And the other guy talking about being raised in a Pentecostal household. "Parents took me to the beach and the Priest was in the water in his full 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 robes. Five year old me thought... weird. Then he grabs me, dunks me in the water, you're saved! No, buddy, I'm not "saved". You just stopped drowning me is all. That's like me saying I'm a firefighter because I'm not currently starting any fires."

And Kat McLevey was the musical guest - she's got a great sense of humour, but her music is depressing. She had everyone laughing with her commentary but the songs were straight - one was titled Prelude to Going Under Anesthetic. "If you're heading up George Street after this, and you wants to get all amped up, b'ys, I'm not your girl", etc.

And from there we took a stroll along George Street for a night cap.

End of July means that the Celebration of Light fireworks festival is back again! Here are few photos of Netherland's nice show this past Saturday. All photos are taken from our 46th floor penthouse, some 14 kilometers away.

Notice Lighthouse Park's small lighthouse in the middle. The huge mountain in the background is Bowen Island.

Grande finale was colorful.

Finally a bonus photo with Vancouver skyline. The tower under construction on the foreground is called Modello and it is topped out, but shame about it at least partly blocking our view of BC Place (the pink building).

Thanks, SignalHillHiker! I wish someone would come up with smokeless fireworks, as smoke always ends up ruining photos of the big finale...

Shooting fireworks is always just luck and the most difficult thing in night shooting from these heights is keeping camera absolutely stable. There is always some wind up here and even the building sways ever so gently, making it difficult to use long exposures when really zoomed out. Anyways, few of those shots came pretty nice.

I've read how to do it, I've tried... nothing even comparable to this. I get some blurry lines of colour on a black background with a few light poles visible at best. And I genuinely do understand what I'm trying to do, I'm just not good enough to do it.

What you've got here is awesome.

^ Notice that it's not completely dark during the Vancouver fireworks. They take place around 10PM. I think the light in the sky helps.
Great photos Klazu.

True, but I assume it was darker than in the pictures. The same settings you use to catch the fireworks would make it lighter overall.

Tbh I just like the composition of the photo. The huge Colombian tall ship and Theodore tugboat in the background, the geometric distribution of the people along the perspective lines, the sky... very surreal.
