If I happen to be in town on that date, I still like to go see my ex-colleagues (I was an officer for a couple years in a Sherbrooke regiment) show their drill skills. One of my buildings overlooks the downtown cenotaph that's the focal point for the whole parade, so from my balconies I have pretty much the best point of view possible.

I was struck by the retro outfits worn by the nurses - do they have a ceremonial uniform in addition to their regular work clothes?

The old roof was replaced from 2008 to 2010. I believe the walls were cleaned at the same time.

Chicago and Toronto are vastly different at street level, but this photo of Chicago kinda looks like the view looking east along Queen West from a vantage point somewhere west of Spadina. Doesn't it?

Can anyone dig out that shot from somewhere in the Toronto photo sets in this thread (or elsewhere, might be a "skyline shot")?

I know which photo you're talking about.

The effect is the same, despite the fact that Chicago is 1.5-2X the scale of Toronto, because everything is 1.5-2X the scale. For example, the buildings in the foreground in Toronto would be 3-8 stories and in Chicago they'd be 5-12 stories. The buildings in the background in Toronto would be 500-1,000 feet and in Chicago they'd be 750-1,500 feet. The street width in Toronto would be about 3-4 traffic lanes, and in Chicago it'd be 4-6 traffic lanes. Etc., etc.

Here are some pictures of a very special event that took place in
Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu.

The city is celebrating its 350th anniversary (founded in 1666), and Gouin bridge, which crosses the river downtown, is 100 years old this year and is soon going to be replaced then demolished. A huge party -all in white (un bal en blanc)- was thrown on the bridge last weekend. White tents were set up on the bridge. A gastronomic dinner, a jazz ensemble and a ball took place. It was a blast!

The theme of the party was chosen because the bridge prior to Gouin was all white and had 'White bridge' as a nickname though it was called Jones, and the new one that will be built this fall and winter will be white too.

Here are some photos from the Burns Bog fire aftermath. The fire got started near these four antennas and one of them collapsed from the heat.



You can tell the burned bog and forest from the red tone.







Strong winds caused the fire to jump the four-lane highway and almost burned down the industrial area next door. It is incredible how the fire stopped (or the firefighters managed to stop it) just meters from the containers.





Traffic lights in this intersection are functional although the fire burned all around it.

What's sad to me is that you're assuming so much about all of those people based on a single moment in time - probably in the range of about 1/500th of a second - captured by this photo.

First we complain that the kids don't go outside and aren't active enough. Now we complain because they're outside and being active. Young people can't win.

That demographic deserve that particular criticism. They're like zombies. You see them in coffee shops sitting together yet they don't actually talk to each other. They pay more attention to the piece of plastic (phones) in their hands than the people next to them. Maybe their friends really are too boring to bother with? Very sad, very lame.

If I invited someone to dinner and they pulled out their phone right at the table they'd be asked to leave. Completely unacceptable.
