Aside from the brighter (silver?) finish, there seemed to be a few more vertical lines and expression to give it a more finished look. Just my opinion.

I prefer the render on the WAM site to what is there now.

Looks like it may have LED lighting running up along the corners of the building.

Can someone confirm this?

Some random pics of Whyte Ave on a Sunday afternoon

I really wish something gets done with the Sun Toyota on Whyte soon. It has become a riff-raff magnet.

Station on Whyte sidewalk under construction - or reconstruction?

Hudson's new patio has really narrowed the sidewalk here

Still, Hudson's gets a thumbs-up for their boardwalk patio

Coming soon - what?

Raymond Block is growing weeds

Cambridge Daycare building west of 108 St is being renovated.
p.s. I really must check out that DVD shop sometime soon.

More of this, please and thanks!

Opening next to Long & McQuaid music shop, east of 109 St.
THANK GOD IT'S NOT ANOTHER FAWKING KEBAB PLACE!!

We need more of these sunken patios

My favorite Sand on Whyte sculpture

Often times you have to carry the design elements of that street around the corner for x' or 1/2 block.

I hope that the City does go review the width, for it does look quite tight. Generally speaking you require 1.5m if I am not mistaken.

Teppan and Izakaya need a few more places in the Downtown, still puzzles me why there are not more of that type of place.

I agree. Businesses need to adhere to the permit. That sidewalk is very busy so there should be no encroachment over what has been permitted. Who do we complain to?

It might have the required room once the fencing is gone, but does look tight. Call 311.

Thats absolutely 1.5m. The trees and garbage receptacle make it look more narrow than it is. Plus they make that sidewalk an obstacle course. There should have been more thought into this.

REMINDER

Vibrant Communities Speaker Series – Enhancing Neighbourliness – July 19

Abundant Community Edmonton (ACE) is part of a large movement that is neighborhood focused, citizen centered and gift based. ACE encourages and enables neighbourhood life shaped according to residents’ vision for where they live; facilitates neighbourliness and connections by linking neighbours to other neighbours, as well as to groups existing and newly formed within the neighbourhood; and discovers and invites into action the incredible gifts people have and want to contribute to their local community. ACE is endorsed and supported city-wide by The City of Edmonton’s Citizen Services Department and is locally sponsored and coordinated by Community Leagues and other leaders in the neighbourhood, with funding opportunities available through Alberta Culture and Tourism’s Community Initiatives Program (CIP). There are amazing examples of community-building happening every day, all around us! ACE works to build upon and celebrate these efforts and is steadily gaining momentum in Edmonton and in other municipalities across North America.

When: Tuesday July 19th from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM (MDT)
Where: Yellowhead Brewery – 10229 105 Street Northwest, Edmonton

Anne Harvey coordinates Abundant Community Edmonton (ACE), a grassroots neighbourhood engagement and organizing framework that encourages and enables neighbourliness and local connections. The City of Edmonton’s role in this citizen-initiated work, is one of support and collaboration. Anne plays a variety of roles within her work with the city’s Citizen Services department including: facilitator; event coordinator; connector; resource developer; and innovator. It is a touch underwhelming compared to the render, but I find still a fantastic tower. The photo in reference is on the dark side in general (as you can see on the Bell Tower).

In photos like this one, much less overbearing and brighter.

Edmonton Tower by Chris Vazquez, on Flickr

That being said, I'd have *loved* if the tower utilized glass like 707 5th in Calgary. (Side note, what a great building that is, too)

Over this weekend we decided to venture downtown for a special night out. We’ve been enjoying DT during the day with the Farmers market on the weekends, and a little bit of shopping. We started the night off with dinner down at Sofra, which was okay (lacked atmosphere) followed by a walk down along the edge of the river valley to the Fairmont. What a disappointment.
While there was a lot of activity on 104th street with Kelly’s Pub having 104st closed the rest of the walk was depressing until we were on the Fairmont Patio. With such a grand river valley one would hope the city tries to promote more activity (river edge walk with activity) and business to highlight our said treasure. We always enjoy the Fairmont patio like many here do as it’s a nice reprieve from the other realities facing our downtown.
Sure many on this forum, along with myself highlight the arena will improve the core, but why do we as a community continue to miss opportunities with our river valley? One day I would hope we had more options along the river for similar experience to the Fairmont in a variety of categories. Sitting on the patio we talked about how the potential is here in Edmonton for something fantastic but is lost continually.
I’m an advocate for our city and in particular our core; however as we know we have a long way to go. We can do much better as a community.

^ The new funicular also includes a new grand staircase into the valley below the Mac. This should be a huge boost to the valley along the lines you seem to be thinking about.

Checked up on Encore; apparently the previously-denied increase in units was not an increase in height to the tower, but only to add a floor to the podium. Tower will still be 138m.

SDAB approved the change:

This, although we really do need more spots overlooking the valley for drinks, food, etc. Rossdale is important in this situation, as is 96st at the top of bank.

Considering it will house a consolidated city admin I would argue it isnt ominous enough...

Something like Stalinist Empire style or Socialist classicism? and a permanent thunder storm cloud directly above. We should demand less for our civic employees.

With the Rossdale redevelopment being the keystone that will make or break how we 'activate' our river edge. PS, no canals. Completely unnecessary.
