Owen Sound at 20000 or so supports an OHL team. I think once you start looking at smaller places, a lot more depends on the local ownership and community. OHL teams have failed in much larger places while it's managed to stick around Owen Sound for 27 years now. Now, granted, it's arena is only seats 3500 and it averages about 2500 or so for its games; even a 5,000 seat arena would be absurd for a small city like Owen Sound or Lloydminster.

I'm not sure where Moose Jaw at 60,000 came from. It's never been close to that.

Lloydminster is about 27,000. It's not unheard of for a city that size to support a team, but it's not a great population base.

According to the latest StatsCan estimates, Lloyd is sitting around 31,000. That's roughly the same amount as PA and MJ, and no doubt it is a richer city. I think they'd be a very good host for a team, but the arena proposal is absurd. Moose Jaw's larger arena works because the city is close enough to Regina that they can act as competition for some acts. I don't see any way in which Lloyd would use more than 3,000 of those seats on a regular basis.

According to the article, the proposed arena was also to be used for concerts and other shows in conjunction with the casino. Perhaps the capacity is intended to meet the requirement for certain types of concerts, with the hockey (over)capacity being a secondary concern.

Imperial oil place in my home town has sold out 2 events in 3 years at 1800 seats. 2/3rds LLodys population. They have no need for and arena over 2500-3000 seats

The same list showing Lloyd at 31k shows Moose Jaw at 34.5k and Prince Albert at 42.5k.

As for richer, everything is relevant.

If any Western city should be aiming for an WHL team, it should be Nanaimo. 100K in the city, a proposal for a new arena and a great rivalry for Victoria.

I would say nearly half of the structural steel is now up. The events centre will be 27m tall, the equivalent of a 6-7 storey building, have 9,000 seats and cost about $105M.

I actually didn't know PA was that big (and I assume they're bigger given the difficulty of obtaining data there). Good for them!

Victoria seems like it has been a pretty decent success for the league, I'd be surprised if Nanaimo isn't a market the league has floated around recently now that the Ice and Broncos are having difficulty.

Also, fun fact while looking things up on Wikipedia just now: Victoria has a 7,400 seating arena for a city of 350,000. Lloyd's is looking sillier and sillier.

that would make it bigger than the arena in Victoria, BC, a city of 350,000 people. Since SaskTel Centre in Saskatoon has 15,200 seats (with room to add 1000 more) most events in Saskatchewan that require that seating capacity such as all the Rush games or the dozen or so concerts already this year, go to Saskatoon.

the University of Saskatchewan is planning on building a 3000 seat arena on campus in the next few years so that should add more options for events in Saskatoon too.

Yes, the main tenants will be the Moncton Wildcats of the QMJHL and the Moncton Miracles of the NBL.

Between the two, that would account for 54 confirmed dates per year (up to 80 dates if the playoff series all went the distance). With concerts, other sporting events and tournaments and other odds and end, they hope to keep the events centre busy 80-100 nights a year.

It's nice to see a good mid-sized arena being built in Moncton. With Rogers Place and Mosaic Place nearly completed we are running out of under construction sports facilities to discuss. Other than Laval what else is there under construction or soon-to-be under construction around the country?

Are there any plans for new junior hockey arenas or even renovated ones?

take the Métro Ligne Orange from the Bell Centre all the way to Place Bell.

A couple tidbits regarding New Mosaic Stadium. There will be a public "Sneek Peak" for the new stadium on Saturday Sept 3rd.

Also the south scoreboard starts going up tommorrow.

Will the Regina vs Saskatchewan game be televised on TSN?

Just tuned into CityTV, they're showing FC Edmonton playing the Ottawa Fury (NASL soccer, one level below MLS). The stadium is at Clark Field, right next door to Commonwealth, and it looks like they've really upgraded it since the last junior football game I went to there. Totally new bleachers with seating on the east side of the field, which actually has a decent crowd in it, a supporters section with singing and drumming, and a new big screen in the north side end zone area. No football lines on the field (assuming they'd be back for when the Huskies and Wildcats start closer to the fall). It looks like it'd be a pretty good time to check out the next game actually, and pretty high level of play to boot.

Almost like a mini Saputo, same colours of the team and bleachers, same dynamic being in the shadows of a much larger stadium.

I actually went today, first FC game for me. It was quite enjoyable, and I definitely see myself going again.

A nice gesture, after kick off they allowed all the guests in the general admission area (which has sub-par viewing angles) move to the main bleachers as the game wasn't sold out.
