The time will come once you stop focusing on the negatives. I left Edmonton about three years ago and have been back for a few months here and there and I have nothing but good things to say about this city. The worst part of the city is people who never tire of bad mouthing it and talking about how happy they are that they've moved on to bigger and better things. I CAN NOT wait to move back to Edmonton. It is a young small city by world standards and it has the potential to become truly great as long as people shut their mouths and stop bad mouthing us across Canada. But it's ok, even with detractors Edmonton is already light years ahead of where it was only ten years ago and it's only getting better!

You speak for the vast majority of Edmontonians and those in this region. Thank you.

I think there is a frustration among a lot of us that while there has been a lot of nice buildings coming up there are still a few that lay an egg badly in areas where we want some vision. ie Strathcona, Brewery district etc.

But overall the city is moving forward nicely and there is a lot to be proud of. The main thing is to change the mindset of younger people to stay in the city, pursue a career and raise a family.

102 Avenue bridge to open mid-morning Friday

July 14, 2016

Good weather and hard work means the new 102 Avenue over Groat Road Bridge will open by mid-morning on Friday, July 15, 2016.

By 10 a.m. Friday, one lane in each direction will open to vehicles and pedestrians. Beginning with Friday’s afternoon drive home, there will be two traffic lanes maintained in each direction during peak hours (Monday - Friday, 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.) with pedestrian access on one side.

Lane reductions will be required, during off-peak hours, over the coming months to complete the finishing work throughout the summer and fall. Finishing work includes installing railings and replacing the concrete median on Groat Road. Multiple weekend and overnight closures of Groat Road and the multi-use trail on the west side of Groat Road will also be necessary in the coming weeks.

The new $32-million bridge features four lanes for traffic with lanes wide enough for ETS buses. It will also feature wider sidewalks and a dedicated bike lane with enhanced barrier protection. The project will be completed by the end of September 2016.

The bridge serves as a major east/west corridor into and out of Edmonton's downtown.

The City of Edmonton thanks the local businesses on 102 Avenue and 124 Street, residents, motorists and trail users for their patience during bridge construction.

^^Speaking of.. we've heard and seen renders for the Northeast corner with EDACC, but I've never heard about the Southeat corner. Owner just sitting on it with no interest in selling or developing?

^there was a rendering kicking around from 07/08 for a tower, but the firm behind it was not going to be doing anything anytime soon.

It looks to me that they wanted a very straight, horizontal line while there is a slump in the ground. So raise the sidewalk over the slump.

I do like having cars separated from others by some big beams they can't possibly get through. And the narrow-ish lanes that slow traffic a bit.

Why would that plan have the big barriers between the sidewalk and the bike lanes, not between the bikes and the cars? It's only cars that you have to worry about getting out of their lanes an wreaking havoc.

By the way, the CNIB proposal made the newscrawler on one of the TV stations in Vancouver. Nice to see that shout-out for the architect's skills.

Quick question for that project: who is the development manager and who's the financial partner? I'm not clear on those points. With the city's approval in-hand, I hope they can keep the momentum going.

Everyone, keep the personal jabs at a minimum. We don't need it choking this thread.

WAM is the proposed developer...on CNIB land. Financing not finalized...at least from what I have read in the media.

From the looks of it, the barrier will be between pedestrians and bicycles yes ... but there'll still be a curb between cyclists and cars.
