As I was saying. This damn neighbourhood is going to drive me to drink.

The Planning Commission is a joke and should be ashamed of themselves.

It's embarrassing. Cathedral is a dying neighborhood that desperately needs this.

NIMBYism at its worst.

Most of the houses in Cathedral are 100+ years old, the foundations are collapsing, the basements are too small, the wooden structures are rotting. even the "new" brick apartment buildings are at least 50 years old.

The neighborhood is in desperate need of redevelopment.

I find it frustrating. People need to realize that Cathedral was built in haste, with substandard materials and labour due to the frontier nature of the city 100+ years ago. Many of the houses were designed and built without electricity and running water. They have cisterns in the basement for their drinking water, they have coal chutes for their coal burning furnaces. I realize that the building have been renovated over the past century but there is only so much renovation can do. Most of the housing stock was simply not intended to last this long.

Safeway was redeveloped, that turned out well, seriously, I shop there all the time it is a great place.

The rest of Cathedral needs to follow Safeway's example; or Connaught's.

The worst part is that the woman who owned the house that is to be torn down (and who started this whole movement to stop this development) did absolutely nothing to keep the house in shape. Nothing had been done in 50 years, and the basement was leaking and had mice, etc. The only other person who was originally against it was her neighbour who would have had a parking lot beside her house. Somehow it snowballed though.

Really dumb.

Cathedral is the Quebec of Regina. They view their neighbourhood as superior to the rest of the city. There are some interesting things to that neighbourhood, but it does need investment or it will crumble.

The planning commission was deadlocked, but do you really think our pro-development council is going to shoot it down? I think it'll get approved on the 25th.

Good analogy. They view themselves as superior, but no one else does...

I think most people think themselves superior or above average.

It's a terrible analogy, demonstrably untrue, and Québecers don't see themselves as superior.

Glad to see Québec bashing knows no bounds. /s

I think we are talking about their self perception of cultural superiority, which is hard to refute.

As far as Quebec bashing, I am pretty sure it is 3rd only to hockey and CFL as the favourite sport in Saskatchewan, but only because they make it so easy.

This is what I meant. In 2006, Quebec was recognized in parliament as a nation within Canada; the Bloc wanted to be recognized as a nation without the distinction "in Canada". The Bloc was pushing for this as a way to weaken the federal Liberals in Canada. But Bloc aside, there are still shades of this showing up in discussions with regards to Quebec now. It is a cultural perception. I wasn't meaning it as a bash, but as something real. Even this week, Trudeau stated Quebec is a nation.

And to be more specific, that a neighborhood dominated by Paris style walk-ups is always better than a mixed neighbourhood that includes modern high-rises and other new construction. Which I guess applies more directly to Cathedral residents than a Quebecois

Yeah people in Quebec don't view themselves as superior. They may think some of the ways they do things are better (as each province and culture feels, and is often correct about), but as a people they don't feel they are better.

I don't think they believe their culture is superior at all. Do you have any actual examples to support your claim? Preferably backed by sources or data.

Quebec bashing is popular here because Saskatchewan is a pretty rural and xenophobic place that tends to view other places negatively. Anything different or "fancy" is looked down upon. Heck, even the "big" cities of Regina and Saskatoon are made fun of in many small towns. Small minds fear bigger things or different things, and xenophobia and fear of the "other" results.

Quebec was recognized as a nation because culturally they are a distinct nation, with their own language, laws (civic compared to common law) and values. The term nation in this context is referring to culture, not to the modern definition of nation-state. People often get that confused. The entire thing was a move by the federal Conservatives to shore up support in Quebec and to further weaken the Liberals, but it was still contextually accurate.

Among historians and other experts you won't find much disagreement that Quebec is indeed a distinct cultural nation within Canada and North America. All provinces and regions of Canada and the US are different than each other to some extent, but Quebec is so far off the charts in the differences that they really are unique. I would argue that Quebec is more different from Ontario or Saskatchewan than either of those two are from the USA.

Here's the thing: Cathedral is demonstrably better than anywhere else in the city. It's the only walkable neighborhood in the city and next to downtown.

The residents of Cathedral are a completely different story. The most self-absorbed NIMBYs there ever was.

I've usually considered this to be nonsense.

Now obviously there are things that make Quebec unique, but if you get outside of central Montreal or Quebec city, Quebec feels exactly like the rest of Canada. It looks the same, it feels the same, it shops the same, etc, etc.

Life in most of Quebec mirrors much of Canada.

Agree the Quebec bashing is completely uncalled for. They view themselves as distict (which they are) not superior at all. Quebec bashing is pure xenophobia and we should be better than that.
Quebec trying to seek advantage and maintain its rights right next door to Ontario (that does view itself as superior to the rest of Canada) is no different than Brad Wall and his goofy antics trying to seek what he feels is advantage for his view of Saskatchewan.

I think the real issue in this thread is that you're taking some lighthearted, intra-national mocking wayyy too seriously.
