I am not normally a fan of painted brick, but now that it is finally done I am liking how this formerly nondescript corner really pops now. I noticed a similarly colourful treatment to a place at York and Strathcona, which also stands out among the seemingly endless rows of red clay brick houses in the old city.

I saw that too. I also noticed that one of the storefronts along John between Main and Jackson has gotten a modern makeover. Didn't think to take a picture for some reason, but it looks good! Also noticed that someone was repairing brickwork on one of the buildings closer to Augusta on John. Hopefully we see some change along John soon!

VON (or whoever else owns the property) are taking a beautiful old Victorian building and slapping butt ugly siding on it. I think this used to be an old Studebaker building. it's on Victoria North.

Weird, but it wasn't a hugely important building. The bigger buildings belonging to Otis and Studebaker were across the street.

I know it's full of medical services like blood labs, clinics, and I believe physio and chiropractors. I remember it being kind of a dreary building. This might not be a bad change.

My doctor is in this building He is part of the HCHC Family Health practice. The interior is very dreary.

Surprised how much HHS is paying to renovate 100 King St W (Stelco Tower). $5.1 million!

HHS is expected to spend $5.1 million on improving the decades-old spaces, and had asked the city for $700,000 – a one-time increase to the cap that is usually $450,000. The move involves relocating 350 workers from the hospital system's aging Chedoke Hospital site on the Mountain.

As poorly as his words were chosen, Whitehead does actually have a point. Shifting hospital jobs from one part of the city to another is not exactly a win for the city. There are no net-new positions, and the city is subsidizing HHS to refit the new offices. Yes, there will be spin-off business for the downtown, which will be at the expense of businesses that served the west mountain location. The overall winner here is HHS. If they stayed at the Chedoke campus, they wouldn't have had their renovations subsidized by the city.

I would very much prefer it if the city was offering subsidies and forgivable loans to entice new business into the city.

I see no issue with the city helping a little bit with the move, considering how prime the Chedoke lands are for redevelopment. We're already seeing it happen ( http://skyscraperpage.com/forum/showthread.php?t=215035 )

If Terry were smart, he'd be talking those lands up to developers. Get the ball rolling and get some density on the west mountain. If they don't succumb to suburban style building, that area could be a neat little midrise community that can generate a lot of taxes for the ward.

I have to disagree. Chedoke is closing their doors regardless if their admin staff move downtown or not. Whitehead knows this. With the downtown still on the mend, any increase in people and commerce is welcome, regardless if it's new jobs or shifting jobs. The whole city benefits when there's a successful downtown. Sadly, Whitehead is only focused on his ward. He needs to go.
