in response to your "I hear that building is where they do virgin sacrifices"...

Speaking of computers and servers.....
I am not a crook

I hear that building is where Hillary Clinton and the Clinton Foundation wanted to set up her private e-mail server, but for certain reasons decided against it......

-convenience
-price
-privacy
-location, location, location.

So instead she opted for the basement of her New York home.

I am going to guess the people that donated millions to make the project happen. Next time you can donate millions and come up with a shorter name.

It's funny. They're providing roughly 10% of the overall costs, meaning 90% of the rest of it will be paid by other means - including a total of 20% or so coming from private donations on the whole (so, over 75% non-private), and it's their name on it.

Always fascinating how public-funded buildings never sport the names of the community. They're always given to vain people who have to have their names on everything, or corporate sponsors. We don't name things anymore after regions or cities or landmarks.

In today's world, there would never have been a Salt Palace basketball arena. They would've sold its naming rights the second they could. It's just a pet peeve of mine. I mind less with buildings named after people, so, I'll certainly take this name over, say, the Nu Skin Broadway Theater, but what made some of these old arenas and theaters special was their names. You know, Capitol Theater, Salt Palace, Orpheum Theatre ... stupid little things like that.

It just kinda diminishes the legacy of something when there's sponsorships, especially when it's almost entirely publicly funded, as is becoming more and more common with sports facilities and, well, theaters.

Man you two are grumpy. 🞵🞵🞵🞵 has always been named after people, for example, almost every mountain ever. It is human to want to leave your mark. Who cares. Stop crying.

The theatre's name is a mouth full. I agree with Mr. Comrade and think the name isn't necessary. If it was only 10% they actually donated, then you know there was some under the table deal going on.

You guys are making a lot bigger of a deal about this then what is necessary.

1) No one will call it by its full name, similar to the Salt Palace, everyone will either refer to it as the Eccles Theater or the Broadway Theater

2) Naming rights for buildings usually function this way. Hence why there has been the Delta Center, ESA, and now the Vivint Arena. Remember how it used to be the Hansen Planetarium, but now it is Clark Planetarium? None of these places provided a majority of the funding to build the buildings, they just provided enough that whoever owned (public or private) gave them naming rights. Most of these agreements will have the ability to change the name later in either case of a time frame or if somebody ponies up more money or what not.

The fact is that they were the largest single donor to the theater, not that they were the majority donor. That's simply how naming rights work these days.

I don't know jtrent, I think you might be incorrect as each and every time I refer to the convention center I refer to it as the Calvin L. Rampton Salt Palace Convention Center, and the arena at the U, I always call the John M. Hunstman Center, I never even knew ESA was a think because of course I always called it by its proper name Energy Solutions Arena, nobody in Cleveland has ever referred to Quicken Loans Arena as The Q, and how dare anyone call the Real Salt Lake RSL or that they play in the RIOT.

I am kidding of course, every city has facility after facility that has longer names because those are the people and companies that were the larger donors. And don't forget how stupid everyone thought the E Center was when it didn't have a corporate naming sponsor.

I thought this was the church owned building where they did the virgin sacrifices.

I am in the group of people that love this building, but hope for a better use. I've mentioned it before, but I think it would be a good location for a third department store for City Creek, as the city gets larger, and more dense with high end residential, something like a Saks would be a nice fit. I had also thrown out the concept of keeping the facade to be used for the dept store purpose but basically rebuilding the entire building and placing a set back residential tower there. Dept store first 3 floors, residential on the next 3 and then a set back tower for 25 floors above that.

Something along these lines. I am in no way pretending to be an architect, and I'm now even suggesting the material be the same, I actually think a glass and steel building rising up would be really cool. This is just an example of the possible massing.

For a minute there, I thought that was an actual street view. Nice job with photoshop. That view looks pretty cool with a tower there.

It's a great idea, FM, but I think I'd rather have the tower be more modern, i.e. have the base be the old building and the tower rising out of it be different, complimentary perhaps, but different.

As an example, not exactly what I want, but an example:

I totally agree with the more modern design, blending with the old. That was simply all I could do with my limited graphics abilities getting the correct angles. Having done it in paint and all.

Would anyone object to me using this photo as my signature as long as I promise to make at least 10% of the posts in this sub forums?

As long as you allow Future Mayor to address you as George S. and Dolores Dore Eccles, I'm down.

I would much prefer it had been called "... Performing Arts Center" over theatre, especially since we already have two other Eccles Theatres in Utah.

I think the Eccles Theater in Logan will suffer some name confusion, because the theater in SLC isn't even open and already a google search for 'Eccles Theater" brings up 10 results for the Salt Lake Theater and only one result for Logan on the first page of results. Where is the other existing "Eccles Theater" in Utah?

Most people will just call it the Eccles Theater, nobody says "I'm going to the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theater" or "the Calvin L. Rampton Salt Palace Convention Center"

All quiet on the CCH front.

This article says it is still in the works, and 800 rooms are on the way.

Does anyone have a better update on timeframe or progress?
