Yep, experienced many an Alberta thunderstorm... And downunder we get some massive ones.

Luckily during the Hainan arrival and departure the weather was fine.

Looks like 19 departures per week from YYC this winter. About the same as last winter. YEG will also be 19 pw down from 24 last winter.

Thanks! I was actually on AC's flight from Heathrow yesterday and the flight attendant had to correct himself when talking about baggage for connecting passengers. It was nice not having to collect my luggage but I still had to go through security again before catching my flight to GP.

This will change with the new terminal, but as of right now the connecting baggage is the biggest hurdle, as I'm sure you saw. Lots for everyone to get used to (airlines, airport authority, CBSA).

It was handled very well. Someone on the AC cabin crew noticed their incorrect message and there was a lot of signage and members of staff at Passport Control.

Random fun fact, right now there are 7 overseas flights on the way to YYC. 6 coming from Europe (AC, TS, WS, KL, BA), and Hainan from Beijing. Air Canada's Narita flight arrived this morning.

Oddly enough, just checked the same information yesterday, for today. 8 arrivals, 2 transpacific and 6 transatlantic. All wide bodies. Looking good!

That's one thing YYC lacks compared to YYZ, YVR and YUL: widebodies that is.

I counted 23 on the ground at YUL the other day. (1 at the AC hangar, 1 at the de-ice pad and all the rest on the main apron.) And there were still some heavies that hadn't landed yet.

I'll try and take a pic one of these days and post it on the Canadian airports page.

Still, 6 or 7 isn't bad for a city of 1.2 million !

Montreal metro is bigger than YYC/YEG metros combined. I guess that's relevant in the widebody count.

Funny you guys are talking about this, I put together a per-capita look at summer widebodies using tosins population estimates and the charts I compile and have posted here and in the Canada section. It's done on a weekly flight per population basis, so the lower number is better.

YYZ: 1 widebody per 12,113 inhabitants
YUL: 1 widebody per 16,874 inhabitants
YVR: 1 widebody per 9,829 inhabitants
YYC: 1 widebody per 26,781 inhabitants

So on a percapita basis YVR sees the most international widebodies per person, next is YYZ, then YUL and YYC is a distant fourth.

Can you provide your input numbers- the values seem questionable. YYZ metro is 5x YYC, so your numbers would suggest 10x the daily wide body count for YYZ over YYC. I question whether YYZ has 80+ wide body landings a day?

But it's not a city of 1.5M as anyone can look up Calgary's most recent civic census to see such.

Hard to fathom but YYZ does see over 80 widebody international flights per day.

Add in the domestic network as well and it would be over 100 per day.

Calgary metro population was estimated at over 1.4 million as of 1 July 2015 so I would guess 1.5 million is not far off at all.
