You just know that gravel lot has sat that way in the middle of the community for 30 years too. Cockring is the sprawliest small town I've ever seen. It has tons of random empty scraggy lots like this scattered around it. Makes no sense at all. Only place I've seen more of this is in Vegas.

It's easy for me to understand how it is very polarizing, and it's difficult for me to pinpoint precisely. I like how it is an abstraction and almost like a simple drawing. It's unmistakably tied to traditional Newfoundland architecture, not just in its reference to fishing rooms, but also in the colours.
The scale serves to accentuate the abstraction, though I think it's a bit too much and people would probably appreciate it much more if it were maybe 2/3rds the present size - still prominent on the skyline, but not quite so overpowering.
The vernacular architecture of Newfoundland is very distinctive and is one of the many things that sets it apart from other places. This hasn't really translate to larger institutional buildings, however, and I appreciate that The Rooms is an attempt at applying the vernacular to a monumental building. It is controversial and far from well liked, but I think it's still preferable to something else that might be more palatable in generable, but missing The Rooms' clear sense of place.
^ The idea for the Rooms' red roofs and large singular fenestrations must have also been taken from St. Bonaventure's College, which is nearby, and from many angles, as shown above, imitates and appears almost as part of the Rooms. I actually prefer The Rooms as it is, to what the more mundane and conventional alternatives might have been. To some extent it may even appear to have a timeless quality.
