Parkades would be preferred.

I would much rather a higher density parkade, like the Centennial.

^Well, he didn't poke the bear. That was ...well

As for me, given the heat, prolly would of had (an illegal) gin and tonic as I am occasionally won't to do in Beaver Hills Park - hey city - about the non-water waterfall.....

Moving on - great river photos, thanks. The Pearl is going to be a landmark for decades to come! A good looking one too.

^^ And, while I'm at it, thanks for the 103 ave 93 street update. Lots going on to spiff up that part of town - good to see

Arts Development to Assist in Revitalization of The Quarters

Quote:
An empty pocket of land and a two-storey brick building in Edmonton have been targeted for a mixed-use arts-focused redevelopment. At 102A Avenue and 96 Street in the evolving neighbourhood of The Quarters, Arts Habitat Edmonton and Artists Urban Village have partnered with the City of Edmonton to construct a purpose-built development for artists and arts organizations.

Apparently that steel was NOT for signage, but in fact part of the roof element. Perhaps it was designed to be retractable to enable crane access to the HVAC and other rooftop equipment?

That wouldn't be preferred at all. Parkade means permanent. Katz has plans to develop this area into mixed use. I'd much rather keep the surface lots that are already present to allow for development in a few years, instead of turning it into parkades for the next half century.

I suppose you could question Katz' intent, and whether he will actually deliver. But I think the Ice district should just about put those worries to rest. Not saying he shouldn't be held accountable if he doesn't deliver.

^^^ Nice to see as well but can't help but wonder if another "artists quarters" is really feasible given how many areas are already established artists quarters (Whyte Ave, Alberta Ave)

In any case I hope it attracts some interest

Not bad at all, a bit dated in material/colour, but great project.

Trump is not the only one that wants to build a wall to keep out the 'undesirables' it seems. Would you be interested in a plebiscite next election to finally put to bed whether or not the majority of Edmontonians want an anti-car society, or one that facilitates all modes of transportation? I'm betting not.

A critical project for this area.

Having sat on the Arena Community Benefits committee for a couple of years now with about 20 other CLs, BRZs, Social agencies etc., this was a long time coming to application. Central Mc CL has worked with them on this directly as well.

DECL has been in discussions with another property, the current Baccarat site...

Swap the 'cultured stone' with a longboard or brick and it will improve its overall look two-fold.

so is it safe to assume we can look forward to a rezoning application for the baccarat site to allow "temporary surface parking" as well? didn't the city buy the baccarat site etc. and grant options to katz/wam for their subsequent acquisition for specific development? why would the city change what would be allowable under the initial agreements? and if it's just temporary, why wouldn't the city put that temporary use in place (where they control it) and keep all of the revenue and still allow the option to be exercised when the end development is what is going to be built?

a long time coming to application???? that's reason to approve something???? the application for surface parking (that wouldn't even have been disruption to the neighbors from a traffic perspective, particularly after hours) at 116th and jasper took a long time coming to application as well. your insistence on turning that down for all the right reasons should be remembered here where all of the same reasons - and more - apply in spades.

Edmonton Buena Vista building delayed a year
http://www.metronews.ca/news/edmonton/20...delayed-a-year-.html?cq_ck=1465348849611

Quote:
The developers behind the overhaul of the historic Buena Vista building on 124 Street have pushed back their construction schedule by a year.

Henry Edgar, a vice-president with Edgar Developments, confirmed the company will start construction later this year, 12 months past it’s initial planned start date, which would mean a building ready for occupancy in 2018.

“The project is going to move ahead and we plan to start construction later this summer,” he said.

The plan, which council approved last year, calls for the building is to keep its historic façade, but add a 25-storey tower on top. The existing tenants were moved out so construction work could start last year, but it has yet to begin.

Edgar said leaving the building empty wasn’t the intention, but they have to keep their eyes on the economics of the project.

“It wasn’t our intention to have the vacant units for that period of time, but sometimes the economics of these projects mean that is what has to happen,” he said.

Edgar Developments is also behind the Hendrix, a rental tower further east in Oliver set to open this fall. He said overall they believe the Edmonton market is a strong place to invest.

“We’re very, very confident in the Edmonton marketplace for rental units. There is a big, pent up demand for new, modern product.”

Jeff McLaren, executive director of the 124 Street Business Association, said it’s disappointing to lose the businesses and the activity.

“It’s frustrating that is sitting empty for over six, seven months now and possibly for a year,” he said.

In addition to the businesses moved out of the Buena Vista building, the Mountain Equipment Co-Op Store is expected to relocate later this year. McLaren said that’s a lot of foot traffic not on the street.

“It was one of the first areas of revitalization for 124 Street and now it’s sitting empty,” he said. “Everything is sort of halted right now and we have a lot of dead empty space. There is not much we can do, but it is concerning.”

no, i'm not in the least bit serious in my comments and criticisms.

i'm just teasing y'all cold.

a great big honkin' surface parking lot or two is just what downtown and the north edge need.
