I do find it strange that city planners would be objecting to this but not the Pearl.

10 extra floors, north of Jasper vs south & The Pearl abuts more commercial properties due north than Emerald. 120 St isn't as densely residential as 114 St, thanks to the synagogue, CNIB & the Allin Clinic.

Plus The Pearl buried their parking vs hiding it behind a podium that's the unholy love child of a 104 St fake warehouse parkade & the Edmonton Clinic.

It's not a huge difference, but every difference makes Emerald look a little worse in comparison.

Sure, I do not disagree, but I think the bigger difference is administrative change if you ask me. Scott Mackie (Pearl) vs Peter Ohm (now).

Scott's planning mantra was basically development at any cost. He got fired (along with whole bunch of others in the department) because they allowed several developers who were trying to push the envelope to basically flaunt the rules and they paid the price after all the backlash

That's the funniest part about all the whining from certain developers now as they try to wrestle wholesale change to major aspects of the development guidelines.. They basically brought the hammer down on themselves

What an amazing weekend in this city. Whyte, downtown, 124 and the valley so busy. Great temps for pride.

As someone who lives in Oliver, I want the height and density. One thing we should consider with the height vs surrounding buildings is that much of the area was limited in height in the past due to the airport. Now with it gone, why not allow the height. If there are problems with the parkade etc that's a different story but don't use the height vs other buildings in the area as an out. Make them use better materials, underground parking, great frontage and exposure for the street retail (its on Jasper Ave so that should be a no brainer). In fact I would love 5 more Pearl type developments in the area.

City gets feedback for Stadium redevelopment

In an April meeting, residents from Parkdale-Cromdale, McCauley, Boyle Street and Alberta Avenue gave the city feedback about the Stadium Station Area Redevelopment Plan (ARP). The plan addresses long-term development in the Stadium neighbourhoods. This includes more housing and business development and using the LRT station for transit-oriented development (TOD) to create a pedestrian and cycle-friendly neighbourhood. Larry Ksionzyk, the principal planner, explained in his presentation that city council has allocated funds to construct the Stadium access street and other infrastructure supportive of transit-oriented development.

The city and Brookfield Residential are partnering to design and construct new streets, two public plazas, an at-grade pedestrian connection to the station, a shared use path on the east side of the LRT corridor, and pedestrian-oriented streetscapes along 84 and 85 Streets and 106A Avenue. If funds permit, this construction will also include improved connections to the ravine and river valley. In general, those attending the meeting were positive about the proposed development. Eric Grant lives half a block from Commonwealth Stadium. He said, “[It’s a] very positive development to improve vacant lands around the Stadium LRT station. A lot of details still need to be very intentionally worked out. The general direction of developing the vacant space and former industrial lands and the parking lots around the station is a very positive step for everybody.”

...

“Community members also want development to be family and community oriented and Stadium Station ARP to be integrated with Northlands’ Vision 2020.”

I'm of no strong opinion on this one, but I found it interesting the number of people supportive of the project on the Edmonton Journal comments.

Cool, I was there on Friday doing photos, and did a bit of sampling after. Any stand-out favourites for you?

Rebuilding Edmonton's McCauley neighbourhood one vegetable at a time

In Alberta Avenue, it was the artists who rallied to take back the neighbourhood from pawnshops and pimps. In McCauley, it might be the gardeners.

The core neighbourhood now has at least nine public garden initiatives in various stages of completion. They’re filling in vacant lots, bit by bit.

“It’s just everyone coming together, growing vegetables,” said Joanne Skani, an apartment resident who paid $20 to grow tomatoes, beans and peppers with her 10-year daughter Maryjane. Skani jumped at the chance after watching the garden boxes replace the weeds and used syringes on 95 Street and 106 Avenue.

I think we tried them all.

The most surprising ? Wood Buffalo Pale ale was very very good.

Rogue was there, and their Dead guy ale is my favorite beer of all time.

I had a porter (well, they called it black) from Licorne that was out of this world.

the flowers are great.

but there's not enough of them to counteract the new and proposed new surface parking lots now being discussed in downtown and neighbouring communities.

Yeah, I'm flabbergasted at the response to the upcoming mega surface lot considering the Downtown-Uber-Alles brigade has their pitchforks & torches handy after the brouhaha on 104 St just a few weeks ago.

I would make a comment about double standards, but evidently that offends people's delicate sensibilities.
