While researching something else, I came across what appears to be a student-led mock proposal for a mixed-use project at the intersection of 300 South and 700 East. How do we get these mock-ups funded? Like with the Office Max/Depot project, these students are envisioning projects superior to what many of the developers are doing.

It's definitely a more interesting design than Encore, Seasons on the Boulevard, Seasons at Library Square, and 4th and 4th.

Hopefully they will actually shop the proposal around to developers, or look to partner with one that is looking for a project. While I didn't go through all their numbers they appear to have done their research and they obviously feel that the numbers pencil out.

As for the residents bitching about the tower, I second the laughable nature of the "60 feet away from us" comments by that resident. The very closest it might be, if the CCH was built right up to the edge of sidewalk and the SE corner of the new Plaza would be over 130' (measured on google earth) so how about you don't sensationalize it Mr don't block my view. That is the interesting thing, some residents like those in the article want those great unobstructed views living in a downtown environment, while others like the city views. I currently live near the top of the south side of the south tower of American Towers and while the view of the valley is spectacular, if I were to buy in American Towers I would prefer an upper north or N/E facing unit in the north tower, because it gives a view of downtown and all the different buildings and activities. So unless he can prove that property values will go down if the CCH hotel is built on the north site, and by proof I would expect something along the lines of a similar situation occurring in another city, than it is purely speculation. He might think the value has gone down, but someone else might think it's all that much valuable.

I'm sure 99 West blocked somebody's view of something else. So I could care less about his complaint, as for The Cascade I would imagine the LDS Church will build it to whatever height demand and foundation structure allows. Even if that is higher than the original proposal.
Yes 60 feet is an exaggeration but who cares. The fact that is so close to 99 west is simply evidence that a tower is appropriate for the area.

375' feet tall across the street from the Temple, yeah 99 west is blocking some views. Not only that but The Inn @ Temple square was demolished to make room for it. It would have been more appropriate to build 99 west on either of the proposed CCH lots than where it is now. I'm not saying that I was against the construction of 99 west, but like glass houses and stuff.

The best part about that article KSL did on the CCH height request is the comments people posted. Usually the comments are rediculous but this time there were a lot of YIMBYs posting that they want to see a new tallest and other taller towers in our skyline! That was refreshing to see some support of a taller tower on the website. I definitely put a comment on there in support of a tall CCH.

What the 99 W resident said in the article was definitely classic NIMBYism because he stated he is ok with highrise buildings, just not one to block his view.

I'm also with FM, as nice as a view of the valley and the mountains are, I would prefer a good city view if I lived in a highrise.

I'm surprised that there are exceptions at all to not go through a Design Review process, especially for a significant highrise as the CCH. I think it should be required regardless of height/zoning, etc. The process allows the city and community to have a say. Every building in Seattle has to go through a multiple step process, including a Design Review packet and presentation., except for smaller residential.

I did a hack job on the editing, but doesn't 151 look so well proportioned with six more floors? Or...six and a half it looks like.

By the way, isn't the time extension they were granted for construction already expired?

Yeah the extension expired in April. They will have to reapply.

Nope, it's too tall and will block my view!

If I could choose a few buildings downtown to add 6 floors to I would choose the Utah One center, tower 111, and either one of the buildings on the north corner of main and south temple. I can't remeber the names of them. I also wouldnt mind the 99west building building being a little taller despite my dispute with some of the residence at the moment.

Just for fun Comrade

I agree with you on your choices, especially the One Utah Center, but I would add 10 floors to it. It is right in the middle of the city with a cool looking pyramid top that is different from anything we have, but is hidden by all the surrounding buildings.

I would cut the Wells Fargo building in half and then stack one side on top of the other.

I'd cut it half the other way and put the halves side-by-side so it's even broader and squatter.

I've been up all night. Don't mind me.

I agree Wells and UT1 could both be appreciated so much more with an extra 6-10 floors. Oh well, what's done is done. Now let's hope we can at least break 30 stories with the hotel, and maybe even 40 in a fantasy world. Really, anything in the 30's would be fine, I just hope it's mid-to-upper 30's.

Ever since that councilman brought up the moon, he's got me dreaming...lol

I have a question about One Utah. The roof is copper but still after over 20 years there is no visible oxidation. Why not? I think it would be cool if it turned green.

It was treated so that it would not oxidize.

It's not actual copper. It's just a colored metal to appear similar to copper. I think it's anodized aluminum.

I honestly like either design for Liberty Square. The original version fits in better with the color scheme of Trolley Square, but the new version has a much more updated, and as the article and architect said, a more mid century design.

The key components to me is the hidden garage at the rear, the zero lot lines on 500 S and 600 E and the sidewalk along Green Street to help create a mid block connection.
