Well, it's an Italian surname.

In Quebec it's pronounced "goo-dzo". As in Vincent Guzzo, the founder of this company. (He owns among other things a fairly large cinema chain in the Montreal area.)

In Ontario and elsewhere in Canada and the US I think people say "guhz-o".

As in former Ontario MPP Garry Guzzo, from Ottawa.

I've never heard of the MPP, but if I saw that name, I would pronounce it "GOOT-zo", unless corrected.

That's because you are personally attentive to the way names are pronounced in the old country. As am I.

Mr. Guzzo himself (the one from Ottawa) pronounces his own name "guh-zo".

It's a joke. I don't seriously dislike Italians. The name and empire just conjures images of the stereotype. My wife calls me a frog all the time because of my heritage. I don't get offended. I call her a kraut. We tease each other about it. Because I'm only 3/4's French my in-laws like to say that the German side will conquer the French in our children.

This was the staircase going to the second floor of the poo and pee coloured building beside the houses. It smelled like an ashtray and had burlap wallpaper. The stairs were so steep they were dangerous.

Not specifically Canadian, but my wife and I always shudder when we pass a Sherwin-Williams paint store, specifically over the logo:

I get that it dates back to 1905, but who thinks that keeping it in this day and age makes any sense?

Their white walls and fluorescent lighting are reminiscent of Michael's. As for the logo, what don't you like? That it looks like they are drowning the world in blood?

I love the logo! It's actually a favourite of mine, although it's not nearly as nice in their modern marketing/appearance. There used to be a hand-painted advertisement for S-W Paints in Saskatoon long before my day. I wish it were still around.
