The worst hotel in Calgary now that the Cecil is gone has got to be the Town and Country Inn on 17th ave in Forest Lawn. I once cold called it and, true story, this guy greeted me and asked if I was from the Coroner's office.
The Region would have a number of candidates, but in the old, decrepit AND ugly category, HoJo's in Kitchener would take the prize. It has most recently been used to house Syrian refugees, who have all now moved into permanent housing so I think it may be sitting unused at the moment.

I think the name HoJo's itself belongs in the Ugly thread. I could imagine Jabba having a cousin named Hojo the Hut.
Calgary 'unidriveways' rearing ugly paved heads all over city
Extended driveways – remember those?
They’re the unibrow of suburbia and a blemish in communities capable of stealing parking from streets, messing up water drainage – and they’re a sorry eyesore that some have said “cheapen” the value of an area.
They’re also known as unidriveways, and they’re an issue the City of Calgary is seeing not just in the northeast communities Metro News reported on in 2014. Now, they’re everywhere.
“It still is an issue for residents,” said Cliff De Jong, senior special projects officer with the City of Calgary. The city still gets complaints, but not to the same degrees as 2014, when the public eye was really on the drives. “Really we do see this occurring throughout any neighbourhood, we’re not focused on any one area. For us they’re across the city.”
According to the city, in 2015 there were 190 complaints, with 66 of them pursued by the city. And they handed out five or six tickets in total ranging from $1,500 to $3,000. The city still handles unidriveways on a complaint-by-complaint basis.
That whole part of Calgary Trail is just awful and shameful.

The industrial areas in Calgary that have houses in them usually just got upzoned to industrial after there were already residences built and with time some got replaced but some still remain. Here's another such street just a little north of there.
Some of the houses have businesses in them but others are still residences. Fun fact: that sidewalk has a stamp in the corner saying it was laid in 1949.
I would assume it is old settlement pattern where houses and shantytowns were placed near industrial areas. I think they stopped this development pattern at the end of World War II and shantytowns were actively being torn down. Also, some isolated houses are the old farm houses that used to be on the farms before they were zoned as industrial zones.

That specific area would have actually been a neighbourhood in Calgary as it is quite centrally located. Other spots in the Industrial Parks in the SE were actually towns at one point such as Ogden. Others are old farm houses.
