I'm becoming a little disappointed of the curved north wall. The renderings show a sleek flat glass facade but the grey material comes across as cheap. I'll hold off judgement until more of it is complete though

I'm also very disappointed, this is very "Vancouver' with the cheap glazing and spandrel, we get this on almost every new building. The result is underwhelming and quite different from the striking rendering.

This is why I am happy that, for example, the design proposed for Queen's Marque uses stone or stone-like and metal materials rather than glass. Halifax is not too bad yet but both Vancouver and Toronto now have a very monochromatic blue/green glass look going on that I don't find very appealing. Masonry has a more substantial appearance and relates well to the older buildings in downtown Halifax.

Then again TD is mostly glass and looks good (partly because of masonry on the Granville Street level). But not every building in the city should look the same. Yet another reason why preserving heritage buildings like the Dennis is a good idea.

Yeah, it's the same ugly bland grey that's on Icon Bay on the Bedford Highway, a building people seem to really like, but which leaves me cold.

It spreads like a disease, developers are addicted to this bland and soulless look which does not create attractive communities. I sometimes view all our new Vancouver condos as the new 'commie blocks', tower after tower of cheap glazing and spandrel, mostly seafoam or grey. After just a few years they look worn and bland and the shoddy materials age terribly. I hope Halifax can avoid this terrible trend by demanding better and more creative materials and maybe The Maple will serve as a warning.

Much of of Metro Vancouver looks like this.

Agreed!!! It's a fantastic proposal, I hope it survives intact, materials are amazing and totally references historic Halifax!! I can't wait to see the finished product!!

I agree. Let's hope that when the remainder of the finishes are in place it will look much better.

Who owns the parking lot directly below this? Could this site not be developed in the future, directly in the line of view towards the harbour?

Owned by the province. Considered as a possible site for a new Law Courts building should they ever vacate either the old place on SGR or the one by the ferry terminal.

Regarding the style of the Maple resembling something similar to Vancouver's glass-city look, I personally don't think that it's necessarily something to be feared of in Halifax.

It's intentionally a stylistic choice that, yes bores some people, but it also makes Vancouver's skyline unmistakable.

On one hand I agree that Vancouver needs to break, a little bit, from its trademark style as there are lots of buildings that look incredibly similar but I really don't think that Halifax has reached that point. And that this building shouldn't serve as discouragement to detract from this style. I know that there is a wave of downtown developments that are using this kind of glass-box style in the city but there are definitely not enough of those developments that would make Halifax look like Vancouver.

When I look at Halifax's skyline today, I see it resembling more of Calgary's/Montreal's skyline. Obviously I am not talking height but I am talking about colour and the varied architectural styles in those skylines. I think that the Maple is going to look nice and that it's going to contribute significantly to the city, and along with the other downtown developments, it will help encourage more development in the downtown area.

what I am seeing when I'm down town and in theses pictures has this project (maple) topped out yet?

I hope not because if that's the case ill be disappointed because of the height I thought it would have from the renderings.

hoping it still goes up!!!

It's not topped out yet. I count 15 floors out of 21 currently finished.
