WOW, this is happening sooner than I expected. Did you guys see the announcement on the Vivint Arena. It's going to get a $100 million-plus facelift.

Does anyone know what is going on with the old Washington Mutual building (NE corner of 500 e 200 s)? The property is fenced off, the main entrance is boarded up and there was machinery on the property as well.

I asked the same question a few pages back, no replies.

I asked a construction worker, he said they are gutting it from top to bottom for a new business to go in, something to do with laundry is what he said.

I will curb your "Oh my Goshes" on this. For now, the Jazz do not know what they will do. Let me say that again, the Jazz do not know what they will do. They will spend money (private or Public if needed) but they have not figured out what that will entail.

Right now everything's a brainstorming idea. But, having two companies that deal with this sort of stuff should help them figure out pretty fast what they can do.

Beats building a 400 Million new arena on the fairgrounds

How many people thought the arena needed a $100 million dollar face lift? Am I missing something? Spend that money of some players or getting a New Orleans style Jazz band to entertain the Jazz Fans! maybe a little music fest before the games to keep people around a little longer. $100 million dollars on a facelift seems like a waste of resources. I need to stop ranting now. This got me going!

It's one of the oldest arenas in the league. It's due for an upgrade (and not just a video board upgrade).

I was just thinking what they could spend all that money on and thought the Parking and Loading Zone on 100 S and 400 W. They could Cover that open pit and build on top of it a new Building. That would help the people interaction on 100 S. That street is still dead even with the new hotels. Heck build a Hotel on top of that.

Inside the arena I can't see them doing much to it other then replace the green seats with yellow ones. Maybe redo the whole lower bowl and add another level of suites. I know the NBA hates how close the fans are under the baskets.

You got to realized when the Jazz installed that big jumbo tron they didn't think it could be used for anything other then basketball game's. But they could host a supper awesome Star Craft Tournament in there and the winner would play Gordon Hayward and everyone could watch.

It depends, really, on what we're talking about.

The fact is, the arena is one of the oldest in the NBA. The NBA is also known for aggressively pushing teams toward new arena deals. If this staves that off for ten-plus years, I think it's worth it. But the last thing Jazz fans want, and especially tax payers, is the NBA essentially telling Utah the arena isn't good enough anymore. The same thing happened in Seattle, albeit in part due to their smaller capacity. Because the NBA pushed Seattle to get a new arena, and voters weren't entirely sold on the idea, the deal died and the team relocated.

The good thing going for Utah here is that they play in a larger arena. Which means upkeep and renovation could make it substantially better without having to spend the costs of building a new arena entirely (Golden 1 Center, in Sacramento, is going to cost $507 million).

So, I'm down with it...plus, I'd like to make the arena more engaging with the street. It is not. The plaza is nice, but only for a portion of the arena - not the entire building. If they could bring it to the street, mix in retail, it'll help with the expansion of downtown westward.

I know some may object, as it is only a vision at this point, but I wouldn't mind forumers sharing ideas for a remodel other stadium/arenas have done or proposed to do.

Beats building a 400 Million new arena on the fairgrounds

An arena (Rodeo) is coming to the Fairgrounds, with money from a number of sources:

State Legislature
Salt Lake County
LDS Church
Salt Lake City

$15 million total. They want it done by the time the Jazz Arena is out for renovations so the Days of 47 Rodeo can happen there. I think we will hear about it publicly in the next month or so.

I'm really curious to see the details. If the NBA is pushing for this, I wonder if there motive is to be a pain in the ass and pressure a sale or move of the franchise to somewhere more lucrative for them. An arena built in 1991 really is not that old for a building. The buildings fine. $100 million in upgrades? Let's see if the upgrades they are thinking of would logically bring about a return on investment. This kinda makes me nervous.

While 25 years is not that old of a building, it is for by NBA arena standards. There are only a few arenas that are older, and most of those either have major upgrades in the works or new buildings planned. If you have listened to interviews with Randy Rigby (former president of the Jazz) during the last few years, this announcement is no surprise. They have been taking about wanting to expand the dining options and number of suites for a while now. Newer stadiums and arenas are treated more like multi-use destinations.

I'm happy that they are extending the useful life of the Arena instead of building new. There is history and a bit of a gritty feel at the arena that you wouldn't get in a new shiny building.
