I am glad to see this being built here, and to see that little building with the parking lot go away. I am assuming that they are also banking on some form of future Ashland BRT that may be built along Ashland.

This is kind of a weird intersection, very commercial, but if the price is right, people will live there. There are in fact, people living there already anyway, across the street and across from the BP station.

710 N Dearborn - medical offices (although the rendering below might be 1 or 2 floors taller than what will actually be built)

I didn't even know they demolished the previous building. They've really been chipping away at that block the past several years, with that hair salon also soon to go. Hopefully the rest of the buildings and the ones one block south are spared.

I really like 710 N Dearborn - but I wish they would have spared the building there and put it elsewhere.

Are you actually truly familiar with those areas of NYC as they are TODAY, or are you just saying it because it's NYC? It reminds me of it because of the more industrial feel that was converted to an area with a lot of different variety in the types of businesses (bars, restaurants, and increasingly retail) it has. Nothing to do with a hipster aspect nor dirtiness.

^ Same. I go to NYC once a month and Fulton Market is starting to feel a lot like DUMBO and the Lower West Side with all the new proposals and retail. Amazing to see this area go from a quite industrial district to the next hot area of Downtown. That being said, Fulton Market has a significantly lower population density (about 5,500 ppl/sqr. mile) than NYC, and even most areas of Chicago. That should change soon with all the new units coming online over the next couple of years.

The NYC comparisons are stupid, but I for the life of me can't connect the dots between Fulton Market and the LES of Manhattan. Two completely different types of neighborhoods. I suppose there are some comparisons to be made with DUMBO.

My LES comparison was more for some of the actual types of businesses (though Brooklyn shares in with that too - Sawada Coffee for example), not built environment. The Brooklyn one was more built env. I should have specified that.

I think some of those places will be fine - they only enhance the neighborhood. JP's has quite a following for example. It would be a shame to see it leave.i
