On a rainy May day, the building is drafty and echoes with construction work, but its vast space and openness lend itself to Rathwell’s vision for a collaborative environment where food vendors can not only sell their wares side-by-side but also share production, storage and distribution space.

Good explanation some of the historical components:

Constructed in 1929, the three-storey building with a red tile roof is considered historically significant by the City of Regina, because of its association with local architecture firm Van Egmond and Storey and Montreal architect Sydney Comber.

It is also known for its original owners, Weston Foods, who were considered pioneers in Canadian baking. It was used as a bakery until 2012.

Leg dome to be unveiled tonight at 7pm. It will not be all that dramatic though. They will just be peeling off the front hoarding. The rest of the scaffolding and hoarding will come down over the next 6 weeks.

I was hoping they would cover the dome with a giant sheet and then disassemble the scaffolding and finally lift off the sheet with the tower crane.

I imagine that was impractical.

I mean, the reason for this store to exist disappeared long ago -- it's a relic of Regina's role as the western headquarters of the (Simpsons-)Sears catalogue. (While it's not mentioned in this article, I'm pretty sure the building at Broad and 4th served a similar retail purpose prior to Sears taking over the former Eaton's location in 1981.)

About 7,000 stone repairs were done on 2,700 different Tyndall stone blocks. Another 10,000 kilograms of new stone, sourced from Gimli, Manitoba, was brought in. To help with that work, four award-winning masons from England — 38 masons overall — were brought in. The copper, the old parts cleaned and other pieces totally new, shines bright like a brand new penny. In all, more than 13,000 kilograms of new copper was installed, while another 44 pieces of more decorative copper were repaired or replaced.

The craftsmanship on those original brackets is amazing. These are components that are really never seen. You would never see such attention to detail today.

I was just looking at the dome with my binoculars from downtown. Once that scaffolding comes down, it will be incredibly striking. I predict this will dominate our skyline all year. Sorry New Mosaic Stadium.

Sears with its 3 stores and 2 giant warehouses, call centre and catalogue center in Regina was once our largest private employer. It's probably Tim Horton's now .

Sears is down to 2 stores and I expect the Sears Home store to close when its lease runs out.

The Clearance Centre property will probably be developed into a car dealership. There are 2 City blocks available if you include the Value Village Mall.

The City of Regina wants residents to give their thoughts on revitalization plans for the Canadian Pacific Railway yards north of downtown.

The city has narrowed it down to three development concepts — all of which include ideas for retail space, a pedestrian walkway and park space.

Kelly Scherr, the director of major projects for the city, says many residents want better access from the Dewdney Avenue Warehouse district to downtown.

"They like the idea of improved connections to downtown, the pedestrian bridge over the tracks, improvements to some of the underpasses on Broad and Albert Street," Scherr said.

"[They] also like the idea of public space of a park or something else to serve the Warehouse district."

The seven-hectare site is expected to be home to commercial and residential developments. The city says whatever concept is chosen, it will be a 10- to 15-year project.

Concept A per Stormer

Concept A – The focal point of this neighbourhood is a central, multi-purpose public market building. In the centre of the area are two parks. Mixed-use buildings of varying heights contain predominantly residential dwellings. Shops and restaurants, including a grocery store, line Dewdney Avenue.



Concept B – This retail destination features a walkable outdoor shopping area, multi-screen cinema and hotel. Shops and restaurants line Dewdney Avenue. In addition to a central public market building, outdoor market square and grocery store, the site includes residential dwellings and office space.



Concept C – Featuring a modern concert hall or theatre, this new cultural destination includes institutional spaces like a library, community centre or college/university. Along with a hotel, residential dwellings, office space and restaurants, the buildings frame a park or civic square where outdoor events can take place.
