In our largest transborder markets (IAH, LAS, and to a certain extent DEN) traffic is down slightly but not as much as one would think. IAH for UA is down significantly, but WS flight has taken up some of the pax and from an airport perspective there is no difference whether the pax fly UA or WS.
Increasing our transborder, and domestic numbers are connection pax where there used to be nonstop flights out of YMM, YXE, YQR, YEG, etc.
But connection effect also has a downward effect on YYC origin traffic destined for USA. A portion of this traffic is now travelling over YYZ and YVR where previously it flew nonstop to the USA. For Aiport reporting purposes this traffic is now recorded as domestic where as they were previously recorded as transborder, the change in designation due to flight pattern change.
I have spoken with a few AC elites who are now using AC domestic connections (YYC-YVR-"USA") rather than UA or AC nonstop transborder. This is partly due to the transborder buildup at YVR and the removal of Rouge on Western Canada transborder, and partly due to the reduction of transborder flights out of YYC.
