First off that wiki page is only for companies based in Vancouver. Vancouver is pretty small and very built out. That basically means high density and expensive, not where your usually find much manufacturing. Most manufacturing is going to be in the subburbs (Burnaby, Richmond, Delta etc.). You will get a better feeling looking at the other pages. A good example of a company that would be missing is Ebco Industries (they built power turbins and large parts for ships etc.) They are based in Richmond. I think Seaspan in North Vancouver is another ship building that can not be neglected. The lower mainland also still has a lot of forest products based manufacturing, e.g., paper and manufactured wood products.

But just looking at the Vancouver list and excluding software you have:

Allied Shipbuilders (They repair and manufacture ships)

AVI Sound International (They make speakers)

Avigilon (Security system gear)

Brodie Bicycles (They make bicycles)

Canfor (The manufacture wood products and some paper)

Dairyland Canada (now part of Agrifoods International they process milk and make cheese) As it turns out food is the largest sub-sector of manufacturing in the world. BC has its fair share.

Daiya (dairy alternatives)

EnWave (Microwave based dehydration machines)

Granville Island Brewing (they make beer)

HTnaturals (clothing)

I could continue on but hopefully that is a start.

I think the point was that it seemed odd to link to a generic list of companies the vast majority of whom are not in manufacturing as a retort to the accusation that Vancouver lacked manufacturing.

There do seem to be a lot of web-service companies on that page. Oh, and Rocky Mountain bikes. I've heard of them. Of course, the frames and components for those bikes are made in China, but they're probably assembled in Vancouver, I'd imagine.

Which is why I only ride Italian frames and use Italian components, because they're made in Italy, not China. And, erm, Romania.

Let's look at some facts shall we?

When looking at Canada's top 50 largest companies {not corporations as someone made the valid point that not all large companies are public} by revenue {which is a far better gauge than profits} we see that I made a mistake! According to the FP Vancouver does crack the top 40 with Telus at #37, then it was Teck Resources at #46, and Jim Pattison Group at #50. **** Please note that these were the only 3 from ALL of BC so nothing in the Vancouver suburbs or anywhere else in the province made the cut.

As far as manufacturing goes......... by sales per province the list for 2015 according to StatsCan id 1} Ontario $289 billion, 2}Quebec $149 billion, 3} Alberta 68 billion, and 4} BC at just $43 billion and on a per-capita basis it lags behind Manitoba, Sask, and even NB.

BC politicians say the boom in BC has been due to commodities and the booming Chinese economy but China is growing slower now than it has in decades and commodity prices are at record lows.

Well if it's not corporations or finance, manufacturing, booming China, or high commodity prices then what exactly is keeping the Vancouver and BC economy chugging along?........................hmmmmmmmm.

That however does not refute what I said. Whether you love the idea that Vancouver has recreated it's economy on real estate or not, it doesn't change the fact that it now has morphed from being a reflection of a strong economy to the backbone of it.

Whether you { or I for that matter} think that is great or horrible Stingray is now irrelevant. You know as well as I do that the province has become addicted to the revenue that the housing market has created for them. The province will do everything to keep the money flowing as they know it is essential for the health of the economy and their own political futures.

Frankly it doesn't make a hoot of difference to me one way or the other but I do dislike how the city's young people, heritage, and sense of community are considered nothing more than collateral damage in the housing game. I don not think a city that is not viable for people of all ages or incomes is eeither healthy or sustainable. If that makes me a nutcase then guilty as charged.

There was an amusing article in Montreal's main paper (on page 2 no less) yesterday about the proliferation of classifieds in Van saying they'd welcome a fuckfriend roommate in exchange for free rent. Apparently it's now a thing, due to rents being now so high compared to wages that many have a hard time affording them...

Please remember everybody it is NOT because of Chinese house flippers and money launderers but because wages have gone up 25% in the last year. The Chinese have no real effect on Vancouver housing and the reason it is a tad high is because the economy is so good and 'everyone wants to live here'. I know this to be true because Christy and our finance minister DeJong said so.
