I'm not sure how renaming a SkyTrain line from "Evergreen" to "Central" helps Vancouver shed its "woodsy-provincial" image. If anything renaming it to Central would make Vancouver look like it's trying to copy Cape Town, London, or Mumbai, and has no originality. "Evergreen" speaks to Metro Vancouver's greenspace and temperate climate, "Central" speaks to nothing.

I accept that. What about "Crosstown LIne," (because it crosses the whole city horizontally) or is that too derivative of ("doo-da, doo-da"). "Evergreen" is ok, but very unoriginal, IMO.

Do you understand the meaning of the word "unoriginal"?

I guess we are just a total copy cat of every other city with an Evergreen line.

How is naming a line that crosses a town "crosstown" original? It is like naming an all white dog "Whitey" because it is white. It is like calling the fat kid at school "Tank" because he is big. It is like naming your new baby "Baby" because it's a fucking baby.

P.S. there IS a crosstown line in Toronto.

Yes, I see your point. You are right. There. Feel better?

You're acting as defensive as a mother hyena.

As for the post from JLOUSA, I predicted that reply would come along the moment I pressed the "submit reply" button. Keep up the hate-on, JLOUSA.
It wouldn't be the same without it.

JEBBY is the only one who understands the situation, perhaps because he's lived and travelled abroad more than some others. Thanks, JEBBY

In any case, BCPhil, there's a raw wound somewhere. My remark started a real .... of defensiveness happening, a sign of truth, however small. Your reaction says it all.
It's not the actual name I'm defending. It's my frustration at you using a name, that local people chose for a local line that maybe you in your ivory tower don't comprehend (nor are you meant to), to look down your nose at the "provincial-ness" of the city I live in.

I understand your point. But first, I don't live in an "Ivory Tower" as you put it. My only 'problem' (and it's a no big deal, really) was that "Evergreen Line" seemed hackneyed to me. ... and again, please, this is just my perception, nothing more ..... There has been so much of "Evergreen" this, and "Evergreen" that, over the years, it seemed rather stale and hokey ....IMHO.

I have no problem whatsoever with the Lougheed to Coquitlam part being called Evergreen Line
. My perception was that, as this line will be long, and transverse, something more "global" (as in 'inclusive') might be better. I'm not trying to have it called "The Vivaldi Line" or the "Cosmopolitan Line," or such other ridiculousness.

All I meant was that, since the term "Evergreen" (take 'The Evergreen Playground' as an example) has been so overused, it has become sort of clichéd FOR A CITY-WIDE line, but that's just my hangup on this. Let's move on and change the topic. Peace, brother.

Let's not forget the nature of names. They are not like other words. The following comes directly from the "Ivory Tower:" names, no matter what word they are, shift within human linguistic structure from their original history of connotations to the one they are applied to. Like human names, the name loses its other aspects and simply becomes known as the kid so named.

I did not like any of the line names when I first heard of their being chosen. But "Expo Line," "Canada Line," etc. no longer bother me. They are just names now. "Evergreen Line" originally sounded clichéd and a bit hackneyed to me also. But it too has become a name and no longer sounds or triggers any other meanings.

I am fine discussing and arguing for good names, but, in spite of what ad and image agencies want us to think, ultimately its not such a big deal.

You're right, names do degrade to the point where they basically become labels for things...

But that's a rather cynical and bleak way of looking at things. Even if names do become so common in their daily usage that they loose meaning for many people, they still do hold meaning.

For example, Marshal originates from an occupational surname meaning "Horse Servant" (or horse caretaker).

Funny coincidence because my parents gave me my name because my mom really liked horses. To everyone else it is a label that they call me, but to me and my family it has a meaning that is very dear to us.

If Marshal is your first name, then I hope your parents had a reason to pick that name, what ever it may be (and I naturally assume they did). I'm sure that they didn't just flip through a baby book and stop on a random page or just pick a name from a 10 ten list because it was in a top 10 list. If it's just your username, I'm sure it's not some random word from the dictionary you chose.

And like our user names. I guess my posts could be labeled "User 44202". But I chose my name to try and reflect on me personally as to how much I like that I am from BC. I didn't just pick a username that would be popular just to look cool to other people (otherwise it would be like Neo6969). I'm sure everyone's else's user names have backstories that are personal to them, some probably even have great stories behind them.

Expo line is because the train opened for Expo, an event that changed this city. Millennium line marks the new Millennium (a very underrated major global event in my opinion; it's going to be a long time before anyone else lives through a new Millennium). I admit the Canada Line is pretty bad, but we didn't name it, it doesn't reflect anything about us or the city. It was required to name it that to get federal funding from Harper. Now that we have a new government, we should totally go back and change it to the Olympic line.

Evergreen might seem hackneyed, until you realize that within 2 km of the end of the line people have to lock up their garbage so it doesn't get eaten by mother fucking bears. In how many other major metropolitan areas do you need to lock up your garbage and pets because of bear attacks?

Hell, a lady was almost attacked by a bear that was hit by a car, 2 days ago.
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-co...m-woman-after-being-hit-by-car-1.3557912

That's 4 km from the Evergreen line Terminus. This IS Evergreen land.

Is it a surprise that others took notice? The general tone of discussion here has gone to complete shit over the past few years.

So crazy, someone who is on this page posts a tweet and is liked by 8 people (many of whom seem like familiar faces). The universe is upside down.

Besides, at that point I wasn't defending the actual name so much as defending Vancouver. But you know, the internets. So crazy.

Vancouver being called unsophisticated or backwards because we don't conform and have a "Metro" instead of Skytrain or "Line 3" instead Evergreen just gets by blood boiling. But I never figured I would make the twittersphere; tweets are reserved for some serious sheeeit yo. So sorry everyone for showing some civic pride. I'll pipe down.

Pfft. I'm sure it was started by me since I am the one that keep on wanting the Evergreen Line name to remain...and rightfully so. Been busy modding my own forum (political threads...ugh) but funny seeing this thread after a few days.

I saw they were removing all the forms, even working at it today (Saturday). Does anyone know if there will be a wall through the pit before I assume they cover it, or will they put a switch there.

The switches are further east, on the other side of Barnet Highway. I believe they will cover it, and I seem to recall the plans including a propulsion power substation somewhere in that area.

Sounds like not a bad idea to add a switch at the tunnel entrances since it's easy to due right now and would help with single tracking.
