FYI, this access is now closed due to interchange construction.

Some fantastic suggestions with great nature, all at the periphery of our great city!

Good for you! Biking is a great way to explore the city and check out construction happenings
I'll have to check out Fish Creek, used to ride some decent trails there, but that was a long time ago.

Some work on the is being done along the Nort-South c-train path to Chinook this past week. Lots of gravel was placed, levelled and packed. Hopefully we can see this finished by the end of the year.

Why would a person mountain bike downtown?

You know where there is even better mountain biking? 80 km west of the 'periphery' of the city.....in the mountains.

I mountain bike on Nose Hill all the time, when I only have an hour to get out and I can leave from my back door. Sure it's not the mountains, but there are some little challenges, and it can be a lot of fun.

FWIW, I can mtn bike East COP from Bankview have my ride be almost entirely on dirt, with the majority of that single track. I love west bragg, but mountain biking from home in the inner city is a particularly unique joy.

Precisely the point. It is simply something else not available in the concrete jungle.

Favourite work out: Edworthy Park hill.

Favourite people-watching: Peace-Bridge to Eau Claire to EV to Inglewood.

Favourite lazy day out: Cycle Tracks on 5th st and 12th Ave

Favourite 75~k: Edworthy to Fish Creek along the Bow, Fish Creek to Tsuu T'ina, Tsuu T'ina to Weaselhead, 45th St back towards Edworthy.

To try some day: full loop of the city parallel to the RR, early morning century to Bragg Creek, Handle-bar camping in the badlands, enjoy the new path Banff-Canmore, Calgary-cochrane via Glenbow Ranch (beware gaps in path), REAL mountain biking in the Ghost and Sheep Valleys.

Happy trails!

How are all the hills you are riding in the NE?

Instigate and incite, that is the majority of what you do on here. Then you whine when people respond to you and you try to tell everyone to stay on topic. No one, except you, made this topic about inner city vs suburbs. If you want people to stay on topic, quit derailing threads.

I wanted to not block you because 1/20 times you actually say something that has value, but it's not worth listening to your broken record of: firepark, elevated c-train lines, cycle tracks, anecdotal scientific studies, hide-your-wife-hide-your-children crime reports and the importance of at least 2500 sq ft.

What's wrong with riding pathways downtown along the river? Different fun, fun nonetheless.

I did a 90km+ ride once starting in Edgemont, east across Nosehill, Beddington Blvd to Nose Creek, Nose Creek to Bow River, followed Bow River all the way to Fish Creek, then all the way across Fish Creek to 37th street, 37th street up to the reservoir, around the Weaslehead, up 37th to 45th street, take that all the way to Edworthy Park, then up home road to Varsity and then along the pathways there back to Edgemont. 90+ km almost exclusively on bike paths. This city is awesome!

Apples to oranges. Cycling in the concrete jungle offers something not available on the periphery. A chance to pull your bike over and have an ice cream, stop at a food truck or stop for a pint of beer, or maybe stop for a Vietnamese sub or, or or...the list goes on. Also for some people cycling in the core is a way of transportation, not just a place you drive to with a car, unload the bikes and cycle for an hour.

I'm not saying that biking in Fish Creek or Nose Hill or one of those places isn't good either, but comparing cycling in the inner city to cycling in the periphery is an apples to Oranges comparison.

That Strava map is pretty good, already downloaded the app on my phone to track a few rides, will have to try a couple more.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, looking forward to getting back into cycling!

Anyone know the numbers for the cycle track over the winter? The numbers should be high for this year based on the mild weather. Lots of people out there this week so far, 5st underpass had over 500 cyclists as of about 9 this morning, should get a few thousand people. Are there any other spots where the city has installed a counter that shows the number?

Sounds awesome. We are spoiled with pathways compared to most cities. Every year a few more gaps get filled in and the network gets even better. Along with rafting, a long ride on the paths is something that sets our town apart.

I heard there will soon be a paved, separated path all the way to Banff. I know Glenbow Ranch near cochrane and the Canmore-Banff leg were recently upgraded, so it seems there aren't many gaps left. Can anyone confirm whether it is indeed possible to ride the North side of the Bow to Cochrane at least (or farther)?
