^ You and Simplicity are like polar opposites when it comes to what is or isn't feasible in Winnipeg... I think most of us occupy points somewhere in between.

Not really. Take the boring Roslyn Road project. Yes, it looks like a seniors home. However, a few setbacks here, some angles there, a change in color midway up, etc would make the project a lot more visually appealing.

In general Winnipeg / Manitoba developers, governments & building owners have extremely low standards when it comes to shape, design, exterior materials, lighting & landscaping. Whether in the suburbs or downtown.

Our ridiculously & needlessly "suburban" city has to have the ugliest & cheapest looking strip malls in North America. Even going to small cities in our weather climate like Grand Forks & Fargo, you notice higher standards.

You are very observant; I wish more people were. When I travel, I immediately identify such things, too.

I notice it anywhere I go. Wow this is nicer or this is different. It frustrates me that something as simple as a strip mall, small building, hotel, etc.. is built as simple and cheaply as possible because it's in "Winnipeg".

Maybe a poster involved in the actual developments response may help above?

..although I'm not asking for a response from said poster..

I'm just interested in the economics and feasibility, to change the project, making the numbers work at the seniors home, turning it into something funky, hip and urban?

There's guys working in the spaceship right now. Installing some finishing material over the rusted metal. Not covering it, just some accents that go with the windows. So looks like the rust is intentional and the tyvek flags are just sloppy work.

It's great to have those voices pushing for things to be better and better. That's how things improve. However I don't get the negativity. It's been well-documented how hard it is to make development numbers work in Winnipeg with our market and climate. If the city only approved shiny masterpieces then we would continue to have total stagnation which is not good. Things like 98 market are filler buildings in low-visibility areas. They are not much to look at but provide much-needed infill that will probably make downtown more vibrant and in the long run make more elegant and expensive projects possible down the road. And in the meantime we're seeing some great projects in higher profile locations like Glasshouse, TNS, Skycity, 300 Main, etc. I mean, if they try to build that H20 type crap at parcel 4 or Osborne station, sure, raise hell about it. But I think we need to chill out a bit.

98 Market is a great example of a crappy design. A larger version of 54 Maryland would look amazing there. It would add much needed texture, and color to the area. It would have an exceptional street level presence.

Charm of Winnipeg

Of course, Polo park is awful. As are all the shopping districts in Winnipeg! And that's great. It's really easy to save money in Winnipeg, because occasionally one is forced to visit some hell-hole to buy something essential, but otherwise, it is really easy to save money. Winnipeg is like the antithesis of Paris; Paris is expensive, because it makes it fun to buy things you never knew you wanted. Winnipeg is cheap, because if you keep your eyes half open, you'd realize that your money is more attractive than the town.
Great place to live, as a result, as long as you realize that ice-rinks and your savings are the best thing about the town. If you're looking for a charming city, though, you'd best be moving along.

EOI is also out for the redevelopment of the former Canada Post Building 266 Graham.

A lot of those are pretty small, and barely get a mention in Winnipeg. We need better thread organization.

Interesting story in Metro today about how the WPS regards the sale of the tower as a big security risk.

http://www.metronews.ca/news/winnipeg/20...gnificant-risk-to-winnipeg-police-s.html

Surely there must be some room for compromise... perhaps the City will need to keep ownership of the tower so that it can maintain control over who leases space. Although frankly if some nefarious parties wanted to conduct countersurveillance of the WPS, couldn't they just access a neighbouring building if 266 Graham wasn't available to them?

Maybe we do need to get into the habit of starting threads for each separate project. Even if a thread for a 4 storey condo only ever garners 20 posts would still be a good record of the project to have vs. letting those posts get lost in the Winnipeg Construction megathread shuffle.

Sorry! I didn't mean that to be negative about the city. I'm really fond of Winnipeg, and one of the things that's great about it is that it is really easy to live cheaply here, because the bulk of the shopping is segregated in really unattractive districts that I find it really easy to avoid, thus, money stays in my pocket. It's as if the city is designed in order to keep people from making frivolous purchases, and thus it's easy to save. Is it wrong to appreciate that?

I suppose. Based on the slow population growth of Halifax, and population difference, I see the number of projects there, over 10 stories, higher than Winnipeg's. I will have to look closer later.

I would be interested in seeing how many projects may be in the works with no public knowledge.

How many 40 story towers are proposed there? Anything like True North Square? Did they get anything close to Glass House in scope?
