It will be interesting to see if they will ever come up with a suitable use for the old courthouse, or if it will be demolished. It occupies a corner of the Civic District, which means a pretty good location that calls for some kind of public building, imo, or perhaps a conversion of the upper floors to government offices with the main floor adapted for public uses of some sort.
The only possible use for it I can see is as a bunker in the event of a Trump Presidency.

I think people could be surprised. In any event, I am not one of those who wants to eliminate Brutalist buildings just because current taste considers them "ugly". I certainly wouldn't take to the streets to try and defend this one from demolition, but it is Kitchener's most prominent example of Brutalism, so to me it has a place. Seeing what has been happening here with some of our "ugly" old factories, has made me appreciate the potential that buildings have for successful re-use.

I don't hate all brutalist structures (I actually love some of them) but this one is abhorrent.

Here's a good 360 view of ugly in the Big E.

https://goo.gl/maps/9fL2VQEQDmM2

You got your white vinyl rentals, ugly suburban condo in a crappy location, more land dug up for more banal condos, and one of the premier strip joints in the city. A hat-trick of ugly.

Regina's idiots are out in full force.

Apartment Proposal Divides Cathedral Neighbourhood.

Within the article there are concerns about "the impact to local wildlife."

Local wildlife? Natural pigeon nesting grounds? Rabid dogs stalking the Meat Shop dumpster?

Sigh. I can see this proposal going the way of the Dodo. I can't wait for the Vape Shop and Hemp Store to open up in the low-cost commercial there right across from the school they are concerned about the project being too close to.

The only real complaint I could see with that proposal would be from the house on Elphinstone immediately behind the building - it looks like it might be in the apartment's shadow for much of the day. Other than that, it seems a good fit for the location.

Two trends I dont understand. The sloped roofs that seem to serve no purpose. Do they have attics in there?

Gables that don't seem to serve any real aesthetic purpose.

I googled 'house plans' and came up with this. When and why did this become such a thing?

You know you're in Saskatchewan when a 4 story apartment is considered "big"

You get similar Nimby idiots here too. Anything above 3 floors in Nimbyland is tantamount to Shanghai level density which will forever ruin the neighbourhood and add thousands of cars that will run over innocent children playing in the streets.

While not my thing this newest trend to me isn't that offensive. Look, the garage is even off to the side for once! Far from the fugliness of 90's salmon coloured stucco or snub nosed monstrosities we've seen before. I would much rather someone with means build this than that atrocity someone posted from Saskatchewan awhile back with the fake columns and Saskatoon skyline stuccoed onto the side.

Edit: my only caveat is that I have seen many examples of the shingles like this uses under the eaves where people don't upkeep them, they fade and get weathered and start to look much uglier.

A couple of hundred years ago to provide more light and space to pitched roofs? Lots of people would find that particular house very attractive, if they could afford the wide lot it would seem to require.

Would it start a war of words to suggest that in some strange way it seems to fit in?
