It is one thing to accentuate a flower bed with old rusted farm equipment for character; it is another for a major downtown high-rise to look ridiculous with rusted metal panels which look like they need to be replaced.

All of stone on new homes is cultured. So it's not a fad.
As for the Corten or Ship Metal. That's been around for a long long time. It's very expensive as well. I use it in my landscaping all the time. Once it's fully rusted it looks even. It takes about 5 years to reach that lvl. Also you can rub against it and no rust goes on you.

Count me in as a fan of Corten Steel. I think Place Louis Riel looks great. I'm not too sure about 62M but I will wait until it is complete before shooting arrows.

Corten steel is awesome. It clads the excellent US Steel Tower in Pittsburgh. Built in 1971, its cladding actually stained the sidewalks around it red.

Of course, it isn't tacky enough for everyone's taste. It could be even better if it were a towering glass Venus de Milo, or a "sexy" leg.

There is a world of difference between the Pittsburgh tower (which is beautiful) and the panels on the PLR. The latter screams that they need a new coating of spray paint.

I bring that up on the rust comment. Looks like whatever material is installed on the UFO, below the lower level windows, is rusting. Tyvek is blowing in the wind, that sort of thing.

Separate, I love the exposed timber and wood being used. I really like that, when the actual structure is timber and black steel.

Nobody should be surprised this is stalled... Same developer as he cubes and he hasn't even finished these! There's still sections on the second phase with Typar wrap showing, not to mention the painted white steel is rusting to shit already. I feel sorry for anyone who bought into this guys projects.

Anyone take a close look at the Winnipeg Human Society building lately, the exterior of the building isn't standing up very well at all, panels look terrible almost like they are delaminatng, not sure if it's a cement based painted panels or something else.

Wasn't the building in the foreground of the picture either re-clad or updated very recently? The gold coloured one.

I don't think we should expect all these private companies to spend millions on their buildings just to look better. It's up to the owner. If the building is functioning fine, why would they do anything? Maybe we're getting spoiled with all these announcements and fancy renders as of late!

That is always my concern when I think of wood applications: how well well they hold up and neglect.

^ As per this older post from the Village thread, Sept, last year, It's a size 7 now, green is different..
At least it's not 6 floors, seems to be an ongoing theme around here, 4-6 every where, the market speaks...
