Yes, the matinees will enliven Main St. on weekends.

I heard that Janet Echelman backed out of the project for Regent Street. Anyone know what the back up plan is for that sweet sweet 1.2 million bucks? Or are we just going to have a bland boring artless Regent.

Regent is supposed to be completed the same time as the PAC. A lot of places say Summer probably late summer early fall.

Just an architect/artist friend. Could be just a rumor but he is usually pretty informed about these types of projects.

I agree Old&New, the West side of Main is definitely under developed at this point. I do believe that with everything that is going on with the UPAC, 111, CCC and the upcoming CCH, that the Southwest corner area of 1st and Main will soon get some long awaited major development. That corner has now become way to valuable to leave as is.
Someone should burn down the Utah Film Center to help get the redevelopment ball rollin.

Here's a story that City Weekly posted yesterday about the Jane Echelman debacle... http://www.cityweekly.net/utah/the-one-that-got-away/Content?oid=3237559

It's frustrating that the city isn't taking this great opportunity more seriously. $2.7 million is a great budget for this project and many nation artists agreed, having submitted proposals. while this space may never be as popular as the "The Bean" in Chicago (Cloud Gate), it had the potential to draw tourists to the location.

While this article is heavily slanted against the RDA, I highly doubt that Echelman is without fault. I really hope that the shortened timeline can leave enough time to construct a world-class piece of art!

I like how it connects the mid-block passage to Regent.

So, that article was lengthy. So, she's out and why?

The City gets upset that the tourism is centered around Temple Square but the monuments they'v made such as the levitating potato on the black obelisk in Gallivan Plaza is the reason why... They'd better not half 🞵🞵🞵 this!

Wow, we are seeing some of the last sections of glass going up! I also didn't realize the glass would extend behind the steel structure, I like it. The 24th floor also seems to have a higher ceiling than the other floors below which provides a little variation to the tower. Thanks for the pics S.P.!

I remembered seeing a photo of the building that use to occupy the southeast corner of Regent and 1st S. I hadn't been able to find it until now. In general, look at how beautiful those buildings were. Not only what use to be on the corner, but especially the third building down, on what is now a parking garage...UGH...I'm extremely happy with what is happening to this block overall. However, I can't help but lament the loss of such beautiful past designs. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the advent of the planned Regent Hotel. To me, that proposed building would recapture some of Salt Lake's lost 19th Century architectural beauty

Regarding the posts above on public art in and around Regent St. and or the PAC, I had completely forgotten about the Seagull Sculpture being set aside for the new theatre. That was one of the only things I loved about the exterior elements of the former Federal Prudential building. Is anyone here in the know about whether a decision has been made for their placement?

As Salt Lake building comes down, ‘The Gulls’ wait to fly again

Salt Lake City » Sculpture is in storage while performing arts center is under construction.

Fifty years ago this summer, 100 seagulls took flight on Salt Lake City’s Main Street — and stayed there for decades.

Now, 65 of them sit in cardboard boxes in a storage room in a dilapidated theater, waiting for their new home to be built.

The other 35 are missing.

The bronze-on-nickel seagulls are part of a sculpture, "The Gulls of Salt Lake City," by California artist Tom Van Sant. The sculpture was installed in 1964 in the then-new Prudential Federal Savings building.

That building, at 115 S. Main in downtown Salt Lake City, is the last of several to be demolished to make way for the city’s new performing arts center. By the end of last week, only the central steel superstructure from which the entire building once hung remained.

Crews removed "The Gulls" before demolition began and put the birds in storage. City officials want "The Gulls" included in the performing arts center’s future.

"The city’s been very deliberate about saying we want them incorporated," said City Councilman Stan Penfold. "The seagulls are going in the building, someplace."

"The Gulls" were incorporated in the original design of the Prudential Federal. Van Sant collaborated with the architect, William Pereira, who is best known for designing San Francisco’s iconic Transamerica Pyramid.

"It came to be one of my first large architectural [projects]," Van Sant, now 83, said in a phone interview Friday from his home in Santa Monica, Calif.

Van Sant designed and built the sculpture himself and installed the gulls with the assistance of master welder Timothy E. Smith. It consisted of 100 gulls made from electro-deposited bronze on nickel, which made them lightweight. Van Sant attached the birds to three stainless steel rods, 120 feet long, held in tension between the roof and a sunken garden below street level...

I find it interesting that the former Prudential Savings Bank building was supported by a roof structure and that 111 is also being supported by a roof structure.
