And the surface ices up all the time. They have removed these pavers across streets at intersections because of this problem. Between this and frost heave, it is not well suited to this climate.

And the unevenness engendered by the frost heave creates depressions for puddles to grow and to freeze over.

They are just horrible things. Horrible on Elgin, horrible in the Glebe; dreamed up by city 'crats and community association types who don't actually observe real-world conditions.

I wonder if there are some hard stats out there about them. I admit I love them - when they're maintained well, they are beautiful and the texture they add to roads is excellent traffic calming. (But yes, I realize there are other ways to realize these goals)

There are, supposedly, extra-hardy pavers that have been developed to withstand harsher climates. See the literature about Toronto's West Don Lands.

Horrible in the Glebe? I don't know, I walk that street every day and quite like it. Haven't tripped once.

Maybe the Glebesters get special maintenance treatment, but where they repaved with Pretty after the reconstruction project, there were frost-heave ice-puddles and trip-hazards after the first winter.

Heard a rumour this week that the Lego Store is coming to Rideau in the new expansion.

I go to Yorkdale Mall every 2 months just for the Lego store (and the Disney store). Nothing like that in Ottawa.

We did have a Disney store at the Rideau centre, where the Women Banana Republic is currently located. Maybe it wasn't working in Ottawa.

You go all the way (5 hours) to Yorkdale for the Lego Store? Did you know there are locations at Carrefour Laval and Fairview Pointe Claire in Montreal, just 2 hours away?

According to this Twitter post, a Disney store is coming back - to be located on the 1st floor of the expansion.

Originally, a Lego store was planned for Bayshore, but I believe those plans (like so many others for that mall) fell through. I wouldn't be surprised to see one show up at the Rideau Centre though.

There was once a Disney store at Bayshore too. Upstairs by the food court, if I'm remembering correctly.

Both of these would be a real coup for the Rideau Centre. Kid focused business (Or the Rideau locations won't carry kids sizes for example) tend to avoid Rideau in favor of Bayshore as the suburbs are where the families are. IMHO the LRT has to be a key factor in the choice to go downtown for these kind of retailers. Alternatively maybe both these businesses now make their money off adults fans?

Very cool, thanks for posting.

I also noticed that Richtree will be located in the former Shoppers, H&M will be on the ground floor facing the street, Roots and Zara will relocate in the new section and Bridgehead Coffee will have a street front store. There are still a few empty location facing the street, one is between Ritchtree and H&M and based earlier drawings, it could be Anthropologie or Pottery Barn (wishful thinking), I doubt Potery Barn since it seems small unless they have more than one floor and the second and or Third floor has a larger square footage. As for the corner of Rideau and Nicholas, based on drawings, it will be a restaurant, I'm guessing a Joey's. The large space at the corner of Colonel By and Rideau, is it the former Exchange restaurant or could it be the back area of the food court, interesting to see what goes there.

The Rideau Centre renovations (and expansion) have been great and very much needed! Its almost embarassing to think of how it looked prior to the start of the work (that concrete Sears, the mixed-match brown flooring, the boring and street-wall Rideau Street side with no interaction with the street whatsoever...

Can't wait to see the final product with the expansion opening (this summer/fall), the stores opening up to Rideau Street, the pedestrian plaza on the left side and the new urban plan for Rideau Street.

The door into the third floor expansion was open today so I took a picture. It looked amazing. They're putting up posters saying the expansion is opening in August 2016. I also took a peek into where they're building the LRT entrance next to Shoppers Drug Mart. Looks good. They've done quite a bit of work.
