By this area, I meant Waterloo Region; should have been clearer.

That said, I wonder about the future of the Mackenzie King approach post-LRT. Take away the buses and it would get almost no traffic, and even now, it has decreased markedly as it is quicker to get to westbound buses through Nordstrom (the layout allows the straightaway to be a prized space in the afternoon rush hour).

The question is how buses would relate once the LRT is placed, but another key factor is if the buses switch, the income levels of those using inner city local routes and STO routes is generally lower than those using suburban express routes.

You are correct, there aren't any Sport Experts in Southern Ontario including Toronto. Sport Experts is mostly concentrated in Quebec and based on that, I would assume that if they do expand to 2 floors, might be a good time to re-brand and make it their flagship store in Ottawa.

Surprised to see HMV still kicking around and possibly thriving. Possibly a niche market now as there are not too many players around in that field anymore. I know the one in Bayshore has been there forever.

I remember when World Music was in the same location at Rideau (circa 1997-ish?)

Don't you worry about hmv... they're doing fantastic

Place D'Orleans & Bayshore have been in the same units for many many years and St-Laurent moved into something bigger maybe 10-15 years ago. Sparks was downsized and then closed, making Rideau the perfect one stop shop for a store. Fantastic location too, right off Rideau Street. Who's the competition... No one really. Walmart doesn't really have a selection and the prices at hmv are just as good if not better then walmart lately. Also, some locations now do Ticketmaster.

They'll be around for sometimes.

I find this fascinating. I got dragged into an HMV in suburban Toronto by a friend on a road trip last year and was amazed to see a massive new location (Eglinton/Laird area) and there were people there shopping. I hadn't set foot in one for years.

I was inspired by this and went to HMV Bayshore today and bought two blu-rays and ordered a third. All less expensive than Amazon who has been my default go-to for many years.

Looks like a good concept. Probably will be a little chilly until about midday when the sun shines down there, but overall Im happy with it.

"Unit paving".

I.e., those bloody stupid things that end up frost-heaved and dangerous within two winters of being installed, and have to be replaced, holus bolus, on an average more than once a decade.

Rideau Centre among country's most profitable malls: Avison Young report

The Canadian Press ~ OBJPublished on March 30, 2016

The Rideau Centre was one of the country's 10 most profitable retail malls in 2015, according to a new report from commercial real estate firm Avison Young.

The downtown mall placed eighth on the list with $1,018 in sales per square foot.

Toronto's Yorkdale Shopping Centre topped the list, generating $1,610 in sales per square foot.

Vancouver's CF Pacific Centre, which was most profitable in 2014, fell to second place with $1,599 in sales per square foot.

Vancouver's Oakridge Centre came in third place, raking in $1,537 per square foot.

Toronto's Eaton Centre, Edmonton's Southgate Centre and Mississauga's Square One were also among the Top 10 most profitable shopping malls.

Bill Argeropoulos, principal and practice leader of Canadian research at Avison Young, says more than $4.5 billion worth of retail properties changed hands last year. That was down 31 per cent from the previous year.

"Despite economic headwinds, retailer failures, digital disruption and the purchasing habits of a new generation, Canada's evolving retail property sector and its top malls are doing just fine," Mr. Argeropoulos said in a statement.

The retail sector continues to attract new entrants and significant investor interest as well, added Mr. Argeropoulos, who noted that hundreds of millions of dollars have been invested to renovate, expand or upgrade some of the country's prominent malls to attract new retailers and combat e-commerce.

What's with all the on-street parking? Are the thousands of parking spots in the Rideau Centre itself not enough?

If properly installed, which I am not saying they will be, they can last a long time. It all depends how the city/CF proceed with it. If they do it like Kingston did around the market it should all be good to go.

Well... you know, they dont need the bus lane anymore because the LRT is right there and all the busses were re-routed to Mackenzie King. So like... never enough parking.

I think its just a place setter, massing of a future building, like the Lyon entrance in the Claridge development.

Private developer will end up designing and building the new edifice, in this case, I believe Scotiabank still owns it.

Much. It can be coloured and textured so as to satisfy the demands of prettyism, without being a piece of crap that is pedestrian unfriendly and instantly turning to crap.
