Yeah, that Next stadium is really beneath Calgary. You'd think they'd be too embarrassed to wheel out a turkey like that. It would be lame even for a place like Halifax with no football pedigree. Honestly, it would be like CSEG proposing a copy of the Regina Agridome as a new rink for the Flames.

This news was just announced in Quebec newspapers and seems relevant here considering the present discussion.

The Mayor of Québec City to meet with IOC President Thomas Bach

The Mayor of Québec City, Régis Labeaume, will travel to Lausanne, Switzerland, this coming April 11, to attend a meeting initiated by the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach.

"Over the past several years, I have often mentioned that the gigantism of the Olympic Games and the astronomical costs involved in organizing them no longer made any sense – to the point where no large city would be interested in hosting them any more, and that this situation might perhaps lead the IOC to call us, stated the Mayor of Québec City, Régis Labeaume. This day came last December 4, when the IOC invited Québec City to a meeting to present its new frame of reference, Olympic Agenda 2020. I will meet with the President, Thomas Bach, and his team there. The population of Québec City knows my position concerning the Olympic Games, and until further notice, it remains unchanged."

"The Gouvernement du Québec looks favourably upon this new approach by the IOC, which seems open to reviewing downward the costs involved in hosting the Olympic Games. From this viewpoint, Québec will support the City in its analysis and reflection process as to whether to move forward following its meeting with the President of the International Olympic Committee", stated the Minister responsible for Government Administration and Ongoing Program Review, Chair of the Conseil du trésor and Minister responsible for the Capitale-Nationale region, Sam Hamad.

Within the next few years, if Québec City decided to submit a bid, the following conditions would all have to apply:

- strong and unwavering social acceptability on the part of the population;
- support from the different levels of government;
- respect of the financial framework of Québec City;
- a real likelihood of being selected at the Canadian level and by the IOC.

So much for mistercorporate's theory that Quebec is off the Olympics list.

Smart move by Labeaume... he appears to be making it clear that any Quebec bid won't involve writing a blank cheque to the Olympic mafia. If the games come to Quebec it should be on their terms, not the IOC cronies'. Hopefully the CSA will do the same with FIFA.

I, as a Calgarian, take exception to your statement above as it wasn't Calgary that wheeled out this turkey. This was entirely of CSEC's doing and should not be considered representative of what Calgarians might actually want to see or support.

The IOC is always encouraging bids and city mayor's frequently promote their cities campaigns whether they have national committee support or not. A similar dynamic happened before the last bid cycle where both Durban and Cape Town were maneuvering and considering a bid, their national Olympic committee made its own recommendations regarding which city is more appropriate at this time and what guarantees they would need. The IOC is desperate for bids right now since many Western cities are balking at bids once reality sinks in and the deadline arises. The more bids the more competitive a contest and the more willing cities are to spend.

Keating added he wishes they could fund all the proposed mega projects, but there is only so much money to go around.

Every part of me believes the animated renders are just a sales pitch to the public. Show the Shallow side of the stadium with the track,soccer fields and basketball nets to take the stadium look away from it. I noticed they barley touched on the arena in the Cnext proposal and I found that odd.

Something tells me The stadium is going to look more like the horseshoed Mosiac meets 2 deck IGF with a partially translucent roof like the "clay" renders show. And honestly I don't mind the idea that much. The gross Ferrari red clashes with the orange track and thats half of what I hate about those original renderings.

Let's not forget first renderings are usually way off, Here's The original IGF,Mosiac,TD Place and THF,

^ The difference is that the renderings you posted were all designed to impress, and all of them were downgraded as the projects ran into fiscal reality. Some more than others... Winnipeg and Sask ended up with great stadiums, Ottawa's is not bad, Hamilton's is, well, meh.

But Calgary would be starting from a point where even the initial stadium rendering mean to wow and seduce people just flat out sucks. That's a scary thought, because where do you go from there?

New franchise for Saskatoon?

My issue with the Calgary design is the interior. I don't have a problem with the exterior or the clear dome. I believe they have some plan for ventilation so that it isn't hot like a greenhouse.

My issue is that it looks like a fieldhouse with telescoping seats and none at one end which doesn't look all that great.

Aside from us biased stadium hoes, what does the average Calgarian think of the design? I haven't seen much about that aside from the location, cost and cleanup. What do they think about the design?

Ken King and Co seem oblivious if people are saying they don't like it. (the design) They do say on their website that several designs are in the mix.
