Canada went through a similar scenario with no gold at the 1988 Calgary winter Olympics. We got stronger each olympiad and by 2002 had become a winter sports power. The COC, turned its attention to summer Olympics after the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. We're very early on it the re-build but there are lots of promising signs already.

Canada will likely never finish first at the summer Olympics but we can certainly match the heights to which the UK and Australia have reached.
My comments about Australia weren't about how it ranked relative to Canada. It was in response to a comment that Oz kinda sucked at the Olympics and international sports in general prior to the Sydney Olympics. That was not the case at all.

While it seems logical for political and other reasons for Ottawa to support a Toronto bid more, it's more complicated than that.

A good part of the money for an Olympic bid and games comes from the host province and not the feds.

If Quebec is willing to put up the cash for a winter games bid in QC but Ontario is hesitant to do the same for a summer games bid for TO, then Bob est ton mononcle. The feds will jump in.

I know. I meant to shed some light on the topic that's all. Mistercorporate's comments weren't accurate; you're quite right there.

listen a world cup would be great (and mainly for what it leaves behind for the CFL) but Calgary and Quebec should go after winter Olympic bids and hard over the next 20 years. It just seems so fitting in comparison to Toronto hosting the summer games. Calgary will have a shiney new arena and hopefully a new or renovated stadium. They have almost all the infrastructure needed. It would make perfect sense for Calgary to host again

I didnt say it sucked at the olympics and international sports i said it wasnt a sports power like it is now and provided evidence to back it up. Its olympic results were worse than Canada back then and we were just okay. Since 2000 the tables have really turned.

A Winter Olympic bid would set back a Toronto bid by decades, until a genuine bid is made by Toronto theres no way Quebec would get a 2nd Olympics. It would be a major slight and political suicide both at a government and COC level.

I agree that it would be next to impossible for Canada to have two successful bids (one summer, one winter) within the next 10-15 years.

I also think that if you had two equally solid and well-supported (municipal, province, corporate, public, etc.) bids from Toronto and Quebec City that the feds would likely choose Toronto.

On the other hand I don't think that the feds will wait forever for Toronto and Ontario just because they're the biggest.

Support for Toronto's bids for 1996 and 2008 was relatively timid compared to what other cities can generally muster.

I have no idea if things would be different this time round. Is Bread Not Circuses still around?

Yeah, the entire country should sit on their hands until Toronto can get it together. I think I have a Toronto '96 hat in a closet somewhere. It'll be any day now, right?

I'm beginning to think that too elly63.. Certain SSP formers insecurities make them post childish remarks like that.. maybe because they are trying to over compensate for something they have that's very very small perhaps

I could see one of either Calgary or Quebec City being Canada's bid for this country's next Olympics mainly because better chance at being successful (how many cities bid on the last Winter Olympics that Bejing won) and Canada has become a strong Winter sports power in the Olympics, better optics in this country with not as much expense as a Summer Olympics.

As far as World Cup Soccer goes, I think we have a good chance at winning a bid to host but it comes with FIFA deciding how much it can compromise in facilities planned for this country to have the Cup, is 10 stadiums enough with largest holding maybe only 70-80,000 tops (?)

Calgary mega projects on the line as the city waits for funding announcements
Kevin Usselman 660news Mar 19, 2016

They’re all good proposals to help stimulate economic activity, but is there enough money available?

Three mega projects are on the drawing board in Calgary, all hoping they will receive some of the anticipated infrastructure spending announcements expected in the coming weeks from the city, provincial and federal governments.

Those looking for money include the $4.6 billion, 40 kilometre LRT Green Line, a $500 million expansion of the BMO Centre at Stampede Park and the $890 million Calgary Next Sports Complex.

Councillor Shane Keating tells 660 NEWS, the project or projects that will provided the biggest return for the city and Calgarians will likely win out.

“We have to look at not just for tomorrow, which ones the best bang for the dollar for tomorrow, but which ones the best bang for the long term as well. And I think that’s part of the huge evaluation,” he said.

Keating added he wishes they could fund all the proposed mega projects, but there is only so much money to go around.

So basically, no other bids till we make another Toronto bid.

Early days though and likely not a final design (I hope)

^ God that thing is a piece of junk. Are those seriously bench seats? You all know how I feel about THF but I would take that in a heartbeat over this Calgary Next abomination.

In what world does that hunk of crap constitute a legitimate pro football stadium?

God I hope nothing close to that render gets built in Calgary. It gives me nightmares. Imagine being stuck in there for a game in Mid July.

The track is so visible and you can even see portable basketball nets just sitting behind the endzone.

That venue would be a massive step backwards from McMahon.. Where are the club seats/boxes? where would the tailgating be? There is absolutely no way that is the place the Stamps would play
