I just don't see the market for pure INT->INT through cowtown. Maybe if we get a MEX flight, that has some potential (eg. MEX->YYC->PEK on WS/HU). Once again, that will require cooperation across airlines and coordination of flight schedules.
The US->International through Canada market is small but growing rapidly market for AC.

Although there are non-stop options available from major USA cities, there is still a market that prefers a one stop option. When the USA routes are 750,000 pax per annum each; even a 0.5% share is a lot of pax.

UA does not care if the pax travel DEN-LHR or DEN-ORD-LHR or DEN-YYC-LHR; all those tickets get pooled into the Anti-trust JV between LH Group, UA, and AC known as ATI++. Costs get apportioned into the JV on a metal neutral basis. That is why on these North America to Europe routes AC is growing like crazy.

In the new terminal, the long walk to/from the gates to central terminal will substantially increase. So much of an increase I anticipate my minimum terminal time to increase from 45 minutes to 1 hour on the departure and 20 minutes to 35-40 minutes on the return. Minimum terminal time is an internal calculation of the absolute minimum time I spend inside the terminal under the assumption I have BP and I am flying carryon only and I am flying solo. I am supported by Nexus card on both arrival and departure.

Based on some of the pictures I have seen, I don't expect the arrivals corridor to have any facilities prior to the entrance of the customs hall. But I am setting my expectations low in hopes of being pleasantly surprised.

What would be nice for those with limited mobility (or those that are just too tired to for the long walk) is a small seating area with a call button feature to request golf cart service. Place the seating area at 2-3 central spots and have a golf cart available at all times. Also place a sign above the seating area so the service is advertised.

Out side the mobility challenged (meaning, a medical condition), I think we make too many concessions for lazy people. Having on-demand golf carts for those people who cannot walk from the sheer tire of sitting too long on a plane is counter-intuitive for a "pro-health walk when and where you can" forum like ours.

The population is getting older and running into mobility issues at the same time airports are getting bigger and distances between gates is increasing. The ultra fuel efficient 787 has a wingspan 30% greater than the DC10 despite similar number of pax. Modern airports must adapt to these realities by offering new services to address customer need. The new connection corridor has all three varieties of assistance: walking, assisted walking, and vehicular.

I fully agree - that is why in my prior note I made special mention for those with true mobility challenges.

What I didn't agree with is your comment that we need a system for "those that are just too tired for the long walk". That's silly, and it is that type of think that has caused our obesity epidemic.

Our source for connecting passengers is other mainly smaller western Canadian cities. Our competition is other large Western Canadian airports, specifically YVR and YEG. YWG has insufficient destinations to be a true competitor.

To date our main competitive advantage over both YVR - and YEG - is that YYC has efficient Domestic and Domestic to International connections. any connections involving USA have been met with criticism that the walk is too long. YVR's main criticism is also long walks, especially connecting between Hawaii and Saskatchewan/Alberta for WS pax at YVR. Addressing these customer complaints in the new YYC terminal design leads to a competitive advantage.

Last year I had an exclusive tour of LHR T2 by an airport representative. The airport was designed on the premise that people would walk everywhere, there was no provision for electronic alternatives that did not involve wheelchair designation on the Record Locator. Walking distances are the number one complaint for T2 and T5, it is pushing pax to avoid LHR connections and go through FRA/CDG/AMS/MUC/CPH/MAD etc.

But here is a little hint for the new YYC terminal, connection by automated CTS system will be the slowest mode of transport (when factorin in lineup and wait for scheduled departure), walking will be the fastest mode and using the moving sidewalks the middle option. Also, CTS is scheduled service that will have maximum pax per hour. So if the CTS lineup gets too long it will move people to consider a walk option. There is your silent encouragement for active transportation mode.

Flew YYC-IAH-PTY and back over the last couple of weeks.

The economy is saved everyone! The YYC-IAH flights were full on both the legs I was on, so that means everything is good right?

Seriously though, on the flight back from IAH on AC Express I'd say that it appeared that the majority of folks were coming back from southern destinations via IAH.

I think that IAH is being supported by United's attempt to keep traffic up there. YYC-IAH-PVR was half the price of any direct this year.

Thanks. I like that skewed balance!

Any of IFP's gates have dual bridges?

All the drawings I've ever seen indicate that each jetway leads to two bridges -- making two gates for narrowbodies and one dual-bridged gate for widebodies.

See 1:17 of this video for example: https://youtu.be/WyvV7BBIJHo

Several of the construction projects that I have a pinch of insider information on are actually ahead of schedule given the fantastic weather we've had over the winter. What is the latest on timeline for the international terminal opening?

Also, any feelers out there on how good the Hainan take-up is looking? It is still early, given their start in June, but just curious. I think I saw a slight sale ($1200 down from $1500) but nothing major. Difficult for them to lower the price too much during the summer peak season.

IFP design for most of the gates looks the same as how YEG built their new gates 62-80.

The bridge on WestJet is 62, I know for a fact it could not extend far enough to reach L2 on anything parked on 62A (the dotted line for cat D+ aircraft at WestJet's wingtip)

Based on the end of the video, looks like there are possibly three dual bridges and the others are YEG-style in that there's 2 bridges off one pier, but it also looks like there's a ton more space so each pier can possibly bridge 2 cat D aircraft. I've been searching for some sort of technical drawing of the apron for a while.

If any airline wanted to pay for the extra staff needed for a double air-bridge, I'm sure the airport authority would make it work. It is really up to the status of service. In this picture the Philippines 773 on the has two rows of business after the entry door. The BA 744 allows First customers to board without passing through any other section. Further up on the map, an ANA 763 is using its first door as an entry door (no second door before the wing root). Some Air Canada original 763s have second full size entry doors before the wing roots, though I think they've been sold/returned the to lease holders. In the current livery they have the over wing exits.

Hainan 787 has a second full size entry door, that they use, but the second entry door wouldn't provide any class separation, and I doubt people are able to follow directions enough to load the different aisles of the plane through the different bridges.

Sure. But look at how IFP's gates are configured... for those other than the ones clearly designated to be dual you're pretty much rebuilding the pier if you want to do it after the act.

Extra sections to Los Angeles from both YYC and YEG today on WestJet, with a -700 routing YYC-LAX-YEG-LAX-YYC, flight numbers 1000, 1003, 1004 and 1005 suggesting it's not for recovery. Something must be up in LA.

The extra section is probably for Spring break for the Catholic school kids, plus Public school kids wrapped up yesterday, so taking the kids out of school one extra day is not that disruptive. WS routinely schedules additional aircraft over the holidays (be it Christmas, Easter, Spring Break, etc.) AC usually sends bigger aircraft (which has also been happening).

AS to add mainline on YYC-SEA in the fall

Effective 1 Oct 2016 AS is adding mainline on one of the three YYC-SEA flights.

Looks like for at least the entire winter 2016/2017 schedule.

The flight will be operated by a 737-800. Seats 16F/147Y - TTL 163 so a decent boost in seats on that run.

AS784 SEA 1030 - 1255 YYC D 73H
AS785 YYC 1350 - 1430 SEA D 73H

The other two daily flights will remain on Q400s.
